Hank's Weekly Notebook (10-14-03)

This week we feature our annual All-JC/NFL Team. KUDOS to LOS MEDANOS (NorCal) coach Van Boschetti who has his Mustangs riding along at 4-1 despite a roster that shows just 12 sophomores and 54 freshmen. We also take a look at big games in upcoming weekends. This weekend for instance: Grossmont @ Chaffey; Mt. San Antonio @ Palomar; Blinn @ N.E. Oklahoma; Jones @ Pearl River and Canyons @ Compton; Iowa Central @ Ellsworth; Nassau @ Georgia Military.

CATCHING UP ON ODDS AND ENDS

Bert Williams, GEORGIA MILITARY's able head coach, now boasting a 6-0 record, is featured on the front cover of AMERICAN FOOTBALL WEEKLY's October issue.  The 34-year old Williams is cited as a "throwback" type of guy, who enjoys coaching and bringing out the best in them.  He served three years under Robert Nunn, now Washington Redskin defensive line coach, and is athletic director, as well as head coach with a 34-4 record to date.

ON THE INSIDE – GARDEN CITY Coach Bob Larson is featured in "Nice Guys Finish First" and Williams and his offensive coordinator, Jeff Tatum, illustrate the two-back offense used by the Bulldogs.  To complete the junior college quinella, Tim Schaffner, Larson's defensive coordinator, has a piece on aggressive play.  All in all it was great to see this highly respected magazine give this much attention to JC coaches.

In 6 games PEARL RIVER has given up more than one TD once, 31, in a 31-27 loss to Hinds.

SCORING ROUND-ROBIN – HINDS beat PEARL RIVER 31-27; PEARL RIVER beat Northwest 17-7; NORTHWEST beat Hinds 23-8.  They are all 5-1.  Who said ranking teams was easy? . . .

SEQUOIAS allowed Gavilan just 3 points in 6-3 victory, giving up its fewest points in its last 76 games.  The Giants blanked Chabot in the 2nd game of 1996, 40-0.

SANTA ANA OT Marc Villafuerte, 6-4, 300, who does a fine job of sustaining his blocks, has committed to UCLA.

TONGUE TWISTER – CITRUS has a TE with the last name of Kapturkiewics.  But it's OK.  His first name is just plain Joe.  MT. SAN ANTONIO's DT isn't the least bit lazy even though his name is "Hacienda" Leifi.

SHORTEST NAME ON THE BOOKS – Jimmy Ko, CERRITOS DE.

MUST REMIND MYSELF to call SNOW coach Jeff Kilts and find out if his QB is really 5-9.  That would be Jason Coutts who leads the WSFL in passing with 115-195-1,437-13-4 stats.  He's not just a little stick since according to the roster he weighs in at 200 pounds. Yep, 5-9, 200 pounds and apparently arms and legs that work real good.
