Grossmont Clobbers Chaffey

Last year it took three overtimes to settle things between Chaffey and Grossmont, but this year it took barely more than a quarter as the visiting Griffins took a 35-0 lead 9 minutes before halftime en route to a dominating 56-10 win over Chaffey October 18th. Jarrod Jackson threw for 250 yards and 4 TDs and no interceptions. Seven of those passes, good for 114 yards and 2 TDs, were hauled in by WR Todd Watkins. On the day, Grossmont rolled up nearly 500 yards of total offense.

But this was a complete team effort, as the defense forced 5 Chaffey turnovers, one of which was returned for a touchdown, and held the Panthers scoreless until the outcome of the game was no longer in doubt.  A long punt return set up another Grossmont touchdown, and the Griffins also recovered an onsides kickoff.  In all, 7 different Grossmont players scored touchdowns.

Appropriately enough, the onslaught began with a Chaffey turnover.  On Chester McCullough's first carry of the day, the ball came loose.  Grossmont's Chanti Bloomer picked up the ball at the 32, then raced towards the left sideline and into the end zone.  That gave Grossmont a 7-0 lead just 3:42 into the game.

Following a Chaffey punt, Grossmont got the ball back on offense, which allowed Jackson and Watkins to go to work.  First they hooked up on a 42-yard pass to the Chaffey 6.  Then, 3 plays later, they combined for a 6-yard TD pass, making it 14-0 less than halfway through the first quarter.

Each team punted once, and then Chaffey was forced to punt again, which brought about another Grossmont scoring chance when Rajive Otah returned the punt 39 yards to the Chaffey 19.  Four plays later, Jackson threw an 8-yard TD pass to Xavier Campbell, making it 21-0 early in the second quarter.

And then it got worse for Chaffey when Grossmont tried a pop-fly onsides kick, much like the one seen recently on NFL Monday Night Football.  Grossmont's Scott Smiley tracked the ball perfectly, making the catch at his own 45.  Four plays later, Jackson found Watkins behind the defense down the left sideline and threw him a perfect 34-yard TD pass.  That made it 28-0.

This time Chaffey got the ball on the kickoff, but lost it 2 plays later on an interception.  Nick Davila's pass was picked off by Chris Marks, who returned the ball to the Panther 11.  On the next play, RB Kashun McClay broke through the line for an 11-yard TD run.  That made it 35-0 with 9:06 left in the half, and basically ended most of the suspense about who would win the game.

Chaffey then went on a long drive, covering 58 yards on 10 plays, but it ended in frustration.  When the drive stalled at the Grossmont 13, on came Jarrod Jakubiak to try a 30-yard field goal to at least get Chaffey on the board.  The kick was long enough, but sailed wide left, keeping it 35-0.

But the Panthers finally got on the board just before halftime.  Dewayne Patterson recovered a Jackson fumble at the Grossmont 33.  Then Davila found Jonathan Wollam for a 17-yard gain, and followed that with a 16-yard scoring pass to Cody Sorenson.  That would be Chaffey's only touchdown of the day, however, and it came after Grossmont's only turnover of the game.

Grossmont added 3 more touchdowns in the second half to push the margin to 56-7.  FB Rainbow Mauga scored on a 5-yard pass from Jackson in the third quarter, while K.J. Walker and Gary Franklin scored on runs in the 4th.  Franklin's touchdown came on a 63-yard run.

Chaffey closed out the scoring on a 20-yard field goal by Jakubiak with just under 3 minutes left.  Several nice runs by RB Cedric Baker helped Chaffey get the ball down the field.  But all that did was allow the Panthers to reach double digits in the scoring column.

Grossmont finished with 490 yards of offense and 30 first downs on the afternoon.  McClay led all rushers with 77 yards on 16 carries, which included a TD.  Ten different Griffins caught passes, but only Watkins had more than 2 catches.  LB Bobby Kelly, who had a sack and a fumble recovery, led the Grossmont defense.

Davila had decent numbers for Chaffey:  17 of 26 for 170 yards, 1 TD and 1 interception.  Baker led Chaffey rushers with 61 yards on 9 carries, though all of that came late in the game.  More damaging than any trouble Chaffey had moving the ball were their 4 personal foul or unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in the first half.  And most damaging of all were the 5 turnovers.  And remarkably, it could have been worse:  Chaffey recovered 3 of their 7 fumbles on the day.
