Hank's Weekly Notebook (10-21-03)

Which team has played the most games without being shutout? Dixie State is #2 on the list with 209. See the rest of the list. VICTOR VALLEY's Scott Jefferies, 6-4, 225, has hit on 124 of 232 passes for 1,843 yards, 20 TDs and just 8 INTs. He also has a punting avg. of 42.4 for 38 boots. The Peko brothers at Canyons are making a splash. and Michigan State is taking notice. Their cousin Tupe Peko played for the Spartans. Lots more...

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Normally we don't pick Players of the Week, but a couple of lads had such outstanding stats we figured this would be a good time for it.  BRIAN ROMNEY, WR, SNOW, 5-9, 175, a J.C. Grid-wire honorable mention All-American in 1999, who has been on an LDS mission to Romania since, touched the ball 11 times against Eastern Arizona and scored 5 TDs accounting for 356 yards in a 70-3 victory.  Romney had 3 catches for 129 yards 1TD; carried once for 5 yards and 1 TD; returned 7 punts for 227 yards and TDs of 79, 74 and 42 yards.  Shades of Dante Hall?  Romney has 4 TDs via punt returns and has averaged. 24.8 on 19 returns.

RUNNERUP would be BUTLER COUNTY RB, Joseph Harris, 5-9, 210, who scored 7 times in a 76-20 thrashing of Fort Scott, while gaining 243 yards on just 15 carries.  The 7 tallies tie the JC record set by COFFEYVILLE's Putzer Dayton in 1986.

Office Depot has come aboard as a sponsor of the COA.  Sponsors are more vital than ever in these fragile financial times…The Peko brothers of CANYONS, that would be DT Domata, 6-4, 280, and LB Suiava, 6-1, 220, are cousins of Tupe Peko, who earned J.C. GRID-WIRE first team All-American honors as a guard at CERRITOS back in 1998.  Tupe went on to play for Michigan State and is now with the Colts in the NFL.  Word has it that the Spartans are looking hard at both brothers.  Speaking of Michigan St., DeAndre Cobb returned a kickoff 100 yards for them last Saturday against Minnesota.  The ex-ANTELOPE VALLEY star has been playing some RB, some CB, and returning kicks.  The Spartans are also said to be high on red-shirt Darryl Melvin, the big 6-6 DE from NASSAU, who could be a starter next year.

LEFT OUT – When listing big games last week, we left out the BUTTE at SAN FRANCISCO tilt on Nov. 15.  The Rams will be seeking a modicum of revenge after losing their second game of the season to the Roadrunners last year.

KINFOLKS ARE WATCHING – When GROSSMONT shelled Chaffey Saturday, former Green Bay star Jerry Kramer was in the stands watching his nephew, Jarrad Jakubiak, who handles kicking chores for the Panthers, just like his uncle did for the Packers.  LONG BEACH QB Jason Washington is the nephew of NFL exec and former pro player, Gene Washington. Dad and granddad watch over ORANGE COAST QB Beau Budde.  His dad is Brad and his grampa Ed.  I believe both played for the Kansas City Chiefs.  DODGE CITY Fr. RB Jon Edwards is a nephew of Barry Sanders.

GROSSMONT'S ace WR Todd Watkins, 6-3, 185, caught 7 passes, some of the spectacular variety, for 115 yards and 2 TDs and went 8 for 8 on PATS.  He is now 36-36 on the PATs and 6 of 9 on field goals.  Last year he scored a total of 100 points, 76 via kicking and he already has 96 points so the 204-point record is definitely in danger.  The record is a little bit divided, however.  The kick-scoring mark is 95 by Leonard Chitty of SNOW in 1985 and Robert Nycz, BAKERSFIELD, had 94.  Right now Watkins has 54 kicking points.  Shae Orrell of NORTHWEST MISSISSIPPI, 99-00, totaled 178 for the career kick mark.  It's extremely rare for a starting player to also handle the placekicking chores.  However, one of the holders of the season scoring record, Larry Battle of REEDLEY, got his 204 via receptions and kicks.

VICTOR VALLEY's Scott Jefferies, 6-4, 225, has hit on 124 of 232 for 1,843, 20 TDs and just 8 INTs.  He also has a punting avg. of 42.4 for 38 boots…REEDLEY held Sequoias to 90 yards total offense, just 20 rushing…REDWOODS went for a minus 16 yards rushing against SAN FRANCISCO and a total of 28…Louisa Fualli, mother of Paulo (Bobo) Fualili, a LB at Dixie State, died in an auto accident on the way to the Rebel's game with Arizona Western…NORTHWEST MISS has clinched the Northern Division of the Miss Juco and will be the host in the first round of the playoffs, Nov. 7 against the 2nd-place team from the South, which could be Jones County, Hinds or Pearl River…Greg Croshaw at DIXIE is using the double QB system and doing just fine thanks.  Adam Madsen and Danny Southwick passed for 275 yards and 4 TDs vs. ground-Arizona Western, a team that passed just twice while losing 34-0.

Frye.

Brandon Jacobs, COFFEYVILLE, gained 186 yards for Auburn against Miss. State, while Cadillac Williams was scoring his 6 TDs…Justin Burks, CERRITOS, LB, is one of Arizona State's leading tacklers and Jason Lowe is finally seeing some action at LB for Oregon State after 2 injury-ravaged years…

GARDEN CITY ace Andre Hall, 5-10, 205, has rushed for 1,164 yards in 8 games.  He is the workhorse averaging 24.8 carries.  HUTCHINSON, used 3 down linemen and 5 Lbers to try to stop him, but he still went over 100 yards. ..Each team scored a safety in the FRESNO-WEST HILLS game.  There were only 126 total yards rushing by both teams…REDWOODS Travis Coulson punted 15 times vs. CCSF and avg. 36 yards…
