CC SAN FRANCISCO, brought back members of their championship 1948 team last
Saturday for their home game with Foothill. The group included the likes
of Ollie Matson and Burl Toler, the first black NFL referee, and by the way, one
of the best.
Former FRESNO QB Mark Hetherington was named DIAA Player of the Week for his
passing exploits at Idaho State, Oct. 18. He completed 30 of 47 passes for
398 yds and 3 TDs in upset victory over Montana.
A couple of pretty darned good 2-loss teams? That would be PALOMAR and
FULLERTON. The Comets two losses both came in overtime by a total of 8
points. The Hornets lost theirs by a total of 11 points, one to Palomar
and one to MT. SAN ANTONIO.
Let's hope the playoffs in Southern California can somehow avoid pitting
teams that have already played one another, at least in the early sessions.
No question about it, the idea of the playoffs has increased interest in games
all over the state.
BLINN's Derrick Ross has reached 1,288 yds after 8 games, but it is QB Dane King, who is breaking all of Michael Bishop's school records. King, a 6-2, 205-pounder, had completed 181 passes out of 302 attempts, for 2,546 yds, 25 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions. Little wonder WR Rashod Turner already has 60 catches for 953 yds and 10 tallies.
GROSSMONT coach Dave Jordan came close to losing his house in the fires
raging around the San Diego area. Three houses burned on his block and two
didn't. Jordan's neighbor, Bob Stuhe, had the foresight to wet down
both houses. Stuhe is a former GROSSMONT player, circa Brian Sipes' era,
and his son Eric is a current Griffin player. This must be Jordan's
year…Two games were postponed because of the fires.
How in the world did PASADENA blow a 21-point lead going into the 4th period
of their contest with SANTA ANA. The Lancers led 42-21, but the Dons came
back with a furious 29-point 4th quarter, highlighted by a 13-yd TD pass Corey Campbell to Dundi Cook with 45 seconds to play. SANTA ANA coach Geoff
Jones took his chances on going for two rather than facing an OT and Donnell Johnson made a diving catch for the deuce. Campbell had a great afternoon
going 25 for 44 and 318 yds with 5 TDS plus the PAT. The two schools
combined for 1,145 yds total offense, Jerome Harrison tallied 3 times for PCC
and gained 255 yds, but the Lancers fell to a most unlikely 0-7 record.
ONE YEAR AGO
This was the weekend that SAN FRANCISCO's all-time best 42-game winning streak came to an end. FOOTHILL hung a 20-13 defeat on the Rams ending a string that started the first game of 1999 and saw CCSF ring up three straight national titles with 12-0 marks. REEDLEY went on to take the national title with a 12-0 mark after downing Fresno twice and finishing off Canyons in the California State title tussle. BUTTE finished second 10-1, N.E. OKLAHOMA third at 10-1, PALOMAR fourth 10-1 and JOLIET, fifth 11-0.
On Nov. 1, TAFT was at the top of the J.C. Grid-Wire rankings 6-0, Fullerton,
2nd with 6-0, Hartford, Md. 3rd, 8-0, N.W. Miss, 4th, 8-1, and Cerritos 5th,
6-1. TAFT had just extended its winning streak to 17 games with a 24-17
win over Santa Monica. Only 5 teams remained unbeaten. On the other hand,
Coahoma extended its losing streak to 48 games. That year ex-COFFEYVILLE RB Mike
Rozier, was awarded the Heisman Trophy following a terrific season at Nebraska.
SOMETHING HAS GOT TO GIVE – FEATHER RIVER winner of all 7 games this year,
travels to SIERRA where the Wolverines are 14 wins in a row and 7-0 on the year.
RAINY RIVER 0-8 with just 60 points scored all season, goes to ITASCA 0-9 and
winless in 11 straight. The Vikings have hit the scoreboard for just 38
points. I'll take Sierra and the Rainy ones to triumph…
There were 9 interceptions in ROCHESTER's 21-7 win over Minnesota West…
Caleb Spencer of PALOMAR is a versatile sort. Listed as a 6-1,
175-pound freshman WR he caught 5 passes for 70 yds against Golden West, rushed
3 times for 21 yards and was 2 for 2 passing for another 78. Teammate Ryan
Lux is among the nation's top JCs in kick-scoring with 67 points carved on 16
of 19 field goals and 19 of 19 PATs…
FRESNO got a tad lucky against long time rival SEQUOIAS when the Giants
failed on a 2-point conversion late in the 20-19 contest. FCC was nailed
for 15 penalties for 149 yds. COS was led by LLario Vital with 30 carries
for 137 yds and a TD, while Nate Wright did the honors for FCC going 128 on 18
lugs and catching 2 for 64 and his 2nd score…
PIMA downed MESA 28-0 in a game played in a strong wind storm. Little
passing and lots of running. Steve Adelman of PIMA gained 114 yds on 20
carries and 2 TDs. Brian Hare, one of the best WRs in JC football with
great speed, managed to catch 4 for 48 yds.
ON STREAKS –
DIXIE has the longest working at 18 games with SIERRA next at 14 and three
teams tied at 9. ITASCA is on an 11-game losing streak, followed by
PASADENA and DUPAGE with 9.
MAKING UP TIME ON SOME TOP INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS –
GOLDEN WEST WR Ryan Partridge, 6-2, 205, caught 7 passes for 151 yds and a TD. He leads the Mission Conf. with 40 catches for 651 yds and 6 scores. LACKAWANNA WR Steve Banks tied the school record with his 8th TD catch, threw a 46-yd pass completion and had 2 KORs for 67 yds, punted 1 for 43…Larry Turner of IOWA CENTRAL has 8G-289-1,300-12 stats and NORTH IOWA's B.J. Flowers 7G-157-863-6. NIAC's Barry Hakes leads in scoring with 78 points and frosh Dac Harris in sacks with 14.5.
