Chabot Upends Favored Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa, ranked #3 in the North and #14 in the nation, was knocked from the undefeated ranks October 6th at Chabot in a hard-hitting game. The Gladiators, who entered the game 1-3, used timely defense, a bruising running game and a few big plays to pull one of the biggest upsets in California so far this year.

Chabot spotted Santa Rosa a 13-0 lead early on.QB Tony Keefer led the Santa Rosa team down the field on the first drive of the night and finished it off with an 18-yard toss to Casey Davis just 2:26 into the game. Another TD pass to Davis early in the 2nd quarter made it 13-0, and Chabot's offense had shown few signs of life to that point.

But then the Gladiators began to take control of the game. Behind the strong running of RB John Willits, Chabot marched down the field. Willits' 1-yard run capped a 7-minute drive and brought Chabot to within a touchdown at 13-6.

Then came the real turning point. Santa Rosa faced a 4th and 2 at the 50 and decided to go for it, but Keefer's pass fell incomplete. Chabot took over on downs with 2:27 left in the half. But they didn't need anywhere that much time. First Willits gained 3 yards on a run. Then QB Daniel DaPrato audibled a pass play when he noticed WR Santos Rodriguez was not covered along the right sideline. Rodriguez had no defender within 20 yards of him when he caught Da Prato's pass and ran into the end zone for a 47-yard scoring play with 1:21 left in the first half.

Chabot continued the momentum in the second half. The Gladiator defense, which had allowed Santa Rosa nearly 300 yards of offense in the first half, kept the Bear Cubs off the scoreboard in the 3rd quarter. And with 1:38 left in the quarter, DaPrato and Rodriguez combined on another long pass play to give Chabot their first lead of the night. After the ensuing kickoff, Keefer went back to pass but lost control of the ball. Chabot LB Kenny Wolfe picked up the ball and took it into the end zone for the score, giving the Gladiators a 27-13 lead after 3 quarters.

Midway through the 4th quarter, Chabot's Javier Rodas tried a 32-yard field goal but missed wide left. However, a roughing the kicker penalty was called, giving Chabot a first down and another chance. The offense was unable to score the TD, but Rodas made the most of his second chance at a field goal and made it 30-13 with 7:39 left. That would prove to be a key 3 points.

Because Santa Rosa wasn't finished yet. Keefer moved the Bear Cubs down the field quickly, and his 30-yard pass to Joe Lawson brought Santa Rosa to within 10 points less than a minute after Rodas' field goal. After forcing a punt, Santa Rosa got the ball back with just under 5 minutes left. However, Keefer was unable to scramble for a first down on 4th down just outside the 30 so Chabot got the ball back with 3:25 left.

But Santa Rosa forced another punt, and this time Keefer led a successful scoring drive. Elijah Calder's 1-yard plunge brought Santa Rosa to within 3 points at 30-27. Just 1:03 remained, however, and the Bear Cubs had just one timeout left, so they had to try the onsides kick. Chabot's Sakai Greer fell on the bouncing ball to secure the win.

On the night, Santa Rosa's passing offense put up some truly gaudy numbers. QB Tony Keefer passed for 488 yards on 32 of 65. WR Joe Lawson made 10 catches for 164 yards, and WR Jesse Bland had 7 catches for 118 yards. However, the Santa Rosa running game produced just 16 yards on 19 carries.

For Chabot, QB Daniel DaPrato had an efficient 204 yards on 12 of 21 with no interceptions and 2 TDs. RB John Willits had 31 carries for 105 yards before leaving with an apparent injury late in the 3rd quarter. WR Santos Rodriguez' 113 yards on 4 catches included the 2 long touchdown plays.

But perhaps the most telling statistic was Chabot's 20:27 time of possession in the 2nd half. That, combined with the big plays and the lack of turnovers, kept Santa Rosa's powerful passing offense from piling up the points even if they did pile up the yardage.

Notes: Great game and big upset!  SR entered 3-0, ranked #3 North, #6 Calif, #14 nationally.  Chabot entered 1-3.  Turning point:  SR gambled on 4th and 2 at 50 with 2:27 left in 2nd qtr - pass fell incomplete.  2 plays later DaPrato and Rodriguez tied the game on a long pass, an audible by DaPrato.  Willits left due to apparent injury (concussion?) after 3rd qtr.  Keefer just dropped the ball that Wolfe scooped up and took in for the TD.  Rodas tried and missed a 32 yd FG midway through the 4th but a roughing the kicker penalty gave Chabot the 1st down.  3 running plays later Rodas got another chance at a (shorter) FG and made it, which ended up being the difference.  SR tried an onsides kick after their 4th TD but Greer recovered to seal the win for Chabot.
