Scottsdale Falls Victim to Ricks Momentum

The Scottsdale CC Artichokes played host on Saturday the 13th to the #2 ranked Ricks Vikings. The first quarter was a defensive struggle as neither team could get anything going offensively. The quarter ended still tied at zeros.

The second quarter was a complete switch as both teams were able to put points on the board. Ricks struck first on a 66-yard TD pass to Johnathan Harline from QB Dallas Stevens. They lined up for the PAT, but ran a fake which they converted for two, which made the score Ricks 8, SCC 0.

Ricks then got the ball back and drove down the field this time Stevens found Jonathan Clark on a 7 yard TD pass. Ricks kicker Jim Marshall booted home the PAT, extending the Ricks lead to 15-0.

It was now Scottsdale's turn to put points on the board, and with 2:52 left until halftime they did just that. QB Jack Tomco hit Shannon Holcombe from 5 yards out, kicker Zane Pence put through the PAT and SCC closed the gap to Ricks 15, SCC 7.

Ricks quickly responded with another score just before the half as Stevens again found Harline this time from 20 yards out. Marshall converted the PAT with Ricks going to the locker room up 22-7.

Scottsdale needed to score quickly in the third to have any chance of mounting a comeback, and they did just that, as RB Justin Holmes pounded it in from 2 yards out, Pence converted the PAT and SCC was back in business only down 8, 22-14.

Scottsdale now needed to have their defense get a stop. They however could not as the Ricks offense was firing on all cylinders. This TD came on a 55 yard pass from QB Robert Haas to Clark, Marshall again converted the point after pushing the score to 29-14 in favor of the Vikings.

Ricks was not done. On their next possession they ran a trick play putting a backup quarterback Luke Knuppenburg out as a receiver, throwing him a lateral, which he in turn threw down the field to a wide open Brantley Oakey for a TD. The play covered 27 yards, Marshall converted the PAT and the rout was on as Ricks pushed the score to 36-14, with a little over 6 minutes left in the third quarter.

Ricks scored scored again on their next possession, as Haas hit Clark from 6 yards out, Marshall booted home the point after and Ricks was now ahead 43-14. Ricks added a 39 yard field goal with about 12 minutes left in the game by Marshall, to close out the scoring 46-14.

The Ricks quarterbacks threw for 395 yards and 6 TD's, picking apart the SCC secondary. The game was dominated in the trenches as the Ricks quarterbacks had all day to find the open man, and the Scottsdale QB's faced constant pressure from the Ricks defensive front.

Scottsdale is off next week and plays at Glendale on the 29th of October at 6:00 PM.
