CSM comeback falls short

"SANTA ROSA – College of San Mateo and Santa Rosa Junior College have played some wild and memorable football games in their history."

"And you can surely add Saturday's 41-38 overtime victory by Santa Rosa to that list.  It took a 33-yard overtime field goal by Dylan Mason, who seemingly shanked it, but it was still good and CSM's comeback had gone for naught."

"The Bearcubs twice seemed to have the game well in hand, leading 21-0 at halftime and 38-10 with 13:05 left in the game.  But they forgot to tell the Bulldogs the game was over."

"San Mateo rallied for four fourth quarter touchdowns and two 2-point PAT's to tie the game.  One play after Santa Rosa had made it 38-10, CSM quarterback Jason Douglas Connected with James Johnson on a 62-yard touchdown."

"The PAT kick failed and CSM was down 38-16.  After having had two punts blocked in the first half, one giving the Bearcubs a touchdown, the Bulldogs special teams made up for their errors, helping CSM to two quick touchdowns."

"CSM blocked a field goal attempt from the CSM 21 and the ball popped up into the arms of James Julian who returned it 85 yards down the sideline for a TD.  The PAT pass was incomplete and the Bulldogs were still down 16."

"On the ensuing kicking Santa Rosa's Elijah Calder was hit hard and fumbled.  CSM's Akbar Jones picked up the ball and ran it in 17 yards for another touchdown.  This time the Bulldogs converted a two-point PAT on a trick pass to tight end Jason Hardee.  That got CSM within eight with 9:39 left.  CSM had scored three times in less than 3 minutes.  The two teams traded interceptions before the Bulldogs took over on their own 44 with 4:18 left.  Douglas continued his second half hot streak, completing five passes, the final going 22 yards to Justin Rhodes for the TD."

"Rhodes was open in the back of the end zone and caught the ball just before he fell back out of the back of the endzone."

"CSM was penalized 15 yards for celebrating on the touchdown, meaning the crucial two-point PAT would have to come from the 17."

"Undaunted Douglas simply faded back and hit James Johnson in the left corner of the end zone for two points and a tie with 2:21 to play."

"Amazingly after a sack by Ian Rodriguez, CSM got the ball back on the Bearcub 39 with

1:11 left, but a penalty short-circuited a drive and time ran out."
