JC Alumni Report 10-20-01

Yesterday was a big day for JC alums playing for 1A and 1AA schools across America. One can't put their finger on any one performance and call it 'the best.' You can make your own judgments as you scroll through the list of individual offensive accomplishments, which are listed in no particular order.

Kentucky lost to Georgia but Snow College grad, WR Aaron Boone, hauled in five passes for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns.

QB Daniel Cobb (Butler Co.) went 28-48-381 with 5 TD and 4 INT in leading Auburn to an OT victory over upset-minded Louisiana Tech.

Baylor couldn't hold off the defending national champs Oklahoma today. But Bears' quarterback Greg Cicero (Palomar) did his best in going 11-28-138 with an INT and a TD. He also rushed 9 times for 26 yards. P/PK Adam Stiles (Butler Co.) punted 7 times for a 45-yard average and also kicked a 31-yard FG.

A big key in Stanford's upset win over Oregon was stopping Ducks' RB Maurice Morris (Fresno). The Trees held Morris to 63 yards on 15 carries and 1 TD. Jose Arroyo (Pasadena) averaged 35.5 yards per punt (4) for the Ducks.

The Colorado Buffalos played Bob Pesavento (Fort Scott) at QB in place of Craig Ochs against Texas. On the day Pesavento went 15-27-165 with 1 INT. One of last year's most exciting SoCal JCs, Robert Hodge (El Camino), saw some action backing up Pesavento. He went 0-1 passing and rushed twice for 13 yards. Chris Brown (Fort Scott) rushed 8 times for 26 yards and caught a pass for 10 yards for CU. Jeremy Flores (Scottsdale) punted 6 times for Colorado, averaged only 36 yards (49 long). Meanwhile, Brian Bradford (Trinity Valley) averaged 37.6 yards on 5 punts for Texas.

BYU was very sharp in a big victory over Air Force today and JC grads did their part. RB/Ath. Reno Mahe (Dixie State) rushed once for 13 yards and caught 3 for 52 and a TD. TE Spencer Nead (Ricks) caught 4 for 49. And WR Mike Rigell (Foothill) caught one for 7, which was good for a TD. And he provided a 42-yard KO return, as well.

WR Anton Paige (NW Mississippi) hauled in what I think was his first TD pass -- and he did it against Nebraska. Overall, Paige contributed 4 catches for 40 yards - and the TD - in a losing effort to Nebraska. Paige was a JC Grid-Wire All-American in 2000. RB Thunder Collins (East Los Angeles) had seven rushes for 41 yards for Nebraska.

South Carolina WR Chavez Donnings (Butler Co.) had 1 catch for 14 yards, which was a TD. And QB Corey Jenkins (Garden City) went 2-3 for 74 yards and he also scored on a 5-yard run. Overall, Jenkins had 7 rushes for 37 yards in the Gamecocks' win over Vandy.

Florida State pounded Virginia today and WR Javon Walker (Jones Co.) played a big role in the winning effort. Walker hauled in a TD pass to start the game and ended up with 6 for 124.

Cal WR Charon Arnold (El Camino) can be happy that he caught a TD pass (3-41 overall). But there's little else to rejoice about if you're the Cal Bears, who got hammered by undefeated UCLA in Pasadena. Eric Holtfreter (LA Valley) started at QB in place of injured Kyle Boller for the Bears. He had a rough go of it going 11-29-102 with the one TD. WR Derek Swafford (Ventura) caught 2 for 21 for Cal.

Thursday night saw Washington State move to 7-0 with a win over 1AA Montana State. In the Cougars win, WR Nakoa McElrath caught 8 balls for 154 yards. Cougars RB John Tippins (Santa Monica) rushed for 100 yards on 24 carries and scored 2 TDs. He scored 2 more TDs on receptions (5-94 with 2 TD). P Alan Cox (Snow College) averaged a whopping 49 yards on 3 punts for WSU. WR Tyjuan Mayfield (San Bernardino Valley) got in the game and caught 2 balls for 16 yards.

Iowa State went to a bowl last season and they could be going to another one in 2001 -- with many thanks to QB Seneca Wallace (Sacramento). In a win over Oklahoma State, Wallace was 16-19-150 yards. He also rushed 10 times for 67 yards and a TD. Not a bad day at the office for the first year transfer!

And there's TE Ben Frederickson (Orange Coast) at Missouri! The big man caught one ball for eleven yards in a Tigers win over Kansas. The Jayhawks got a strong performance from WR Roger Ross (Garden City), who hauled in 5 balls for 89 yards. But that wasn't all for Ross. He also contributed 4 punt returns for a whopping 110 yards (27.5 avg.).

What has happened in Manhattan, Kansas? The K-State team lost to Texas A&M, which is the Wildcats' third loss in a row. There is positive news, however. RB Josh Scobey (NE Oklahoma) rushed 18 times for 74 yards and a touchdown. And QB Marc Dunn (Ricks) finally saw some action in place of starter Ell Roberson. Dunn, who threw for over 4,000 yards at Ricks last season and was All-Everything, completed 8 of 11 passes for 69 yards. He also scored on a short plunge. Wildcats FB Rock Cartwright (Trinity Valley) carried the ball 11 times for 41 yards and added a TD. Finally, we must add the name Lawrence "Taco" Wallace (Mt. SAC) to the list of contributors. He brought down 2 passes for 17 yards.

WR Kwazi Leverette (SUNY-Morrisville) ran once for 10 yards and caught one ball for 59 yards in his Syracuse Orangemen's win over Temple. And FB Keith "Thump" Belton (NE Mississippi) got two carries for 4 yards for Syracuse, too.

Rutgers got a win over Navy and in so doing, Scarlet Knights RB Ravon Anderson (Nassau) accumulated 73 yards on 13 carries. Anderson was a SuperPrep AA out of high school in 1997...signed with North Carolina where he played one season...rushed for over 1,000 yards at Nassau CC...and then transferred to Rutgers.

WR C.J. Jones (Garden City) caught a 59-yard TD pass for Iowa in the Hawkeyes' win over Indiana. On the day, Jones had 2 grabs for 63 yards. Brad Banks (Hinds), who is the backup QB to Kyle McCann, was 1-1 for 5 yards and carried the pigskin once for 2 yards. Indiana receivers were paced by Henry Frazier (Chabot), who had a fantastic game. He nabbed 5 balls for 92 yards on the day.

Ohio State had their way with San Diego State, but they couldn't stop PK Tommy Kirovski (Palomar) from kicking some field goals! Kirovski nailed two (29, 38) in the losing effort. Ohio State WR Chris Vance (Fort Scott) led all receivers with 5 catches for 87 yards. SDSU strong safety Garrett Pavelko (Palomar) intercepted a pass, too.

Rochester CTC grad, WR Antoine Burns, made three catches for 25 yards in Minnesota's win over Michigan State.

P Jarad Preston (E. Arizona) had a stellar day punting for East Carolina in their win over Memphis. Preston averaged 44.2 yards on 5 kicks.

Houston QB, Nick Eddy (American River), had a nice game but lost to Cincinnati by one point. On the day Eddy went 15-23-184 with 2 touchdowns.

Last year, the most exciting offensive player in Mississippi Juco ball was arguably WR Doug Gabriel (Miss. Gulf Coast). And now he's starting to showcase his talents at Central Florida. This week Gabriel made 7 catches for 142 yards with 2 TDs against Louisiana-Monroe. Throw in 2 kick returns for 64 yards.

1AA Idaho State nearly beat 1A Utah State today. If it had happened, much credit would have gone to ISU PK Javier Garcia (Citrus). He converted FGs of 47 and 28 yards on the day. Idaho State quarterback Doug Baughman (Cerritos) completed 16 of 33 passes for 217 yards with 2 TDs and 3 INTs. Former Orange Coast punter Eddie Johnson averaged 39.2 yards on 4 punts for ISU.

Buffalo WR Maurice Bradford (SUNY-Morrisville) nabbed 5 balls for 46 yards in a loss to Kent State.

Former Cerritos WR David Bautista had two catches for 33 yards in a Bowling Green win over Akron.

Utah RB Dameon Hunter (Chaffey) rushed for 109 yards on 18 carries against Wyoming. The Utes won, 35-0. Hunter's counterpunch in the backfi
