PROSPECTS: Independence CC

Independence C.C. in Kansas is 1-7 on the year, which isn't so good. But the Pirates, with first year coach Kent Keith at the helm, do have themselves a few great players in 2001. Leading the charge are WR Anthony Chambers and LB Marcus Whitmore, who led several defensive categories.

WR Anthony Chambers
Top 101
(6-1, 200)
Liberty, TX
Comments: A great kid, who has unbelievable hands. Played QB his first season at Indy. Runs 4.4 and is an exceptional athlete. In eight games he hauled in 34 passes for 594 yards and 5 TDs, which is among the best in conference. Add in 234 on punt returns (led conference; 1 TD) and another 168 on kick returns for 996 total offense. Last year, Oklahoma and Purdue were among suitors along with Texas A&M. He graduates in December with no grade problems. A "yes sir, no sir" kid. Leaning to TAMU if they want him. Michigan State, K-State, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, and many others interested.

ILB Marcus Whitmore
Top 101
(6-1, 225)
Laurens, SC
Comments: Coaches feel he will be an All-American. Leading tackler in the Jayhawk Conference, which should tell you something! 112 total tackles with 85 unassisted. 3 INTs in eight games with one touchdown and 6 sacks. 19 tackles for loss is also tops in conference. A flier, who played FB his first season. Could run below 4.4 forty according to one of his former coaches. Nebraska, Mich. State, and everyone else loved him in the spring. ILB is new to him but he's making plays at this spot. Through three games he is leading the conference with 15.3 tackles per game and three sacks. Graduates in May.

OLB Rashawn Harvey
(6-3, 205)
Chicago, IL
Comments: Brother is Rocky Harvey of Illinois. San Jose St., Wyoming, KU, Arkansas are all interested in his services. He projects to safety at the next level. Had 48 tackles through seven games.

CB Brian Chandler
(5-9, 175)
Witchita, KS
Comments: Wyoming is interested and Kansas is interested too. A good athlete who has been a mentor to other kids in the backfield. "A silent leader," according to one of his coaches. Great grades and person.

DE Lavangalis Beasley
(6-1, 270)
Chicago, IL
Comments: Height is only knock. East Carolina, Southern Miss. are two biggest suitors. Moved to DE from NG after last year. A team captain, who graduates in May. Same kind of motor as 2000 All-American Henry Bryant (Garden City), who is now with Kansas State.

TE Steve Brown
(6-4, 230)
Kansas City, KS
Comments: December grad who is a good basketball player, too. Purdue, Nebraska sending mail along with Okla. State.

Freshman to watch...

S LeUndo Adams
(6-2, 195)
Bellevue, IL
Comments: "He's downhill and he will hit you," said former coach. Has endured a lot of tragedy in life with father dying in spring and mother was paralyzed in a car accident. 83 tackles on the year, which is third in the conference.

CB Eric Fuller
(6-2, 190)
Clinton, SC
Comments: Lots of SEC schools after him. 5 INTs in three ball games. School record is 7.
