Bogarin's 4 TDs leads Chaffey to win over SD Mesa

John Bogarin ran for 102 yards and four touchdowns to lead Chaffey College to a 34-21 Foothill Conference win at home over San Diego Mesa on Saturday. The Panthers remain undefeated throught eight games.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA—John Bogarin ran for 102 yards and four touchdowns to lead Chaffey College to a 34-21 Foothill Conference win at home over San Diego Mesa on Saturday.

Turnovers were the story in the first half as Chaffey (8-0, 6-0) lost two fumbles and was intercepted twice. However, San Diego Mesa (5-3, 3-3) couldn't capitalize on the turnovers.

"Our worst enemy is not our opponent, but ourselves," said Chaffey coach Carl Beach. "We were on an emotional roller coaster ride and the game should've been over in the first half."

The Panthers took a 7-0 lead with 14:05 left in the first quarter after recovering a fumble on the Olympians 33. Two plays later Panthers quarterback Jeff Disney rolled right and found a wide open Artie Allen in the end zone for a 5-yard scoring pass.

The Olympians tied the game, 7-7 with 6:11 left in the first quarter on their best drive of the day. San Diego Mesa covered 80 yards in 16 plays, culminated by a 6-yard touchdown run off left tackle by Jimmy Green.

"We tackled poorly in the first and third quarters," said Beach. "We didn't stop Green and it was embarrassing."

Chaffey took the lead for good, 13-7 with 6:01 remaining in the first half. The Panthers had an 80-yard, 14-play drive of their own with Disney completing five straight passes in the drive. Bogarin bowled over two Olympians on a 6-yard scoring run.  With 2:16 left in the first half Chaffey extended its lead to 20-7.

Bogarin wouldn't be denied as he chugged his way over three Olympians on
a 14-yard touchdown gallop.  Chaffey extended its lead to 27-7 with 6:48 left in the third quarter as Bogarin swept 6 yards around the right corner.

San Diego Mesa made the game close by scoring the game's next two touchdowns. Doug Brady scored on a quarterback sneak from 1 yard out to cut Chaffey's lead to 27-14. With 12:38 left in the game Shawn Corley scored on an option run to the left to cut the Panther lead to 27-21.

"We kept San Diego Mesa in contention until our last drive," said Beach.

"It wasn't a good team effort, but we rose to the challenge when we needed to."

In the middle of the fourth quarter the Panthers put the game out of reach with an eight-play 72 yard drive, with all the yards coming on the ground. Bogarin ran 4 yards off left tackle for a touchdown with 3:08 left in the game to increase the Panthers lead to 34-21.

"Bogarin is an elusive runner," said Beach. "He's a real gamer and gives us a spark when it's needed. With Andrae Perry dinged up Devon Hudspeth came in and played hard, too."
