On the day, Chandler finished 19 of 29 for 265 yds and no interceptions.
Three of his TD passes went to WR Hannibal Thomas, who finished with 9
catches good for 125 yds. RB
Jonathan Smith continued his assault on the record books with two more
touchdowns, setting new Mission Conference marks for TDs (28) and points (168)
in a season. He had a game-high 143
yds on the ground as part of 196 all-purpose yards.
Things went well for Pasadena from the start.
The Lancers took the opening kickoff and drove 77 yds on 8 plays to grab
the early lead. Chandler's spectacular 30-yd pass to Danny
Pittman—Chandler was falling out of bounds as he threw the ball into the end
zone some 40 yds in the air—gave Pasadena a lead they would not relinquish.
The pass was Chandler's 21st TD toss of the season to set a
new PCC school mark.
Long Beach seemed to avoid disaster when, after a Craig Richardson fumble was
recovered by Jeff Runnells, the Vikings forced a 36-yd field goal attempt by Joe
Timchenko that missed badly. But
that just delayed the onslaught. The
Pasadena defense then forced a punt, allowing Chandler, Smith & Company to
go back to work. Smith capped the
drive with a 6-yd run to make it 14-0 Lancers.
Long Beach closed the gap back to a touchdown on a 9-yd run by Richardson
just before the end of the 1st quarter.
Viking QB Jason Baughman and WR Clint Bingham combined on several passes
on the drive. The 1st quarter ended with Pasadena ahead, 14-7.
Then came the 2nd quarter, and that's when Chandler really took
over. First was an 8-yd pass to
Thomas to make it 21-7. On the next
PCC possession, Chandler hit Allan Kennett with a 20-yd scoring pass to make it
28-7. On the next PCC possession
after that, Chandler found Smith for an 11-yd pass to make it 35-7.
Long Beach scored a touchdown of their own on a 19-yd pass from Baughman
to Teron Marshall to make it 35-14, but Chandler answered back with a TD run
from 6 yds out to make it 42-14 at the half.
In the second quarter alone, Chandler threw for 3 TDs and ran for
Though the outcome was essentially decided by halftime, Chandler continued to
shine in the 3rd quarter. He
threw TD passes of 32 and 20 yds to Thomas, making the score 55-14 and giving
him 6 TD passes on the afternoon.
Chandler and Smith weren't the only Lancers setting records.
Kicker Joe Timchenko, who made the first 7 extra point attempts, set a
new PCC mark with 43 extra points on the season.
He broke a school record previously shared by ex-Ram kicker Mike
Long Beach was led by RB Craig Richardson, who totalled 89 yds on 19 carries,
and WR Clint Bingham, who hauled in 7 catches for 79 yds.
QB Jason Baughman went 15 of 33 for 188 yds and a TD, but also threw 3
interceptions. LBCC committed 5 turnovers on the day while PCC had none.
So it was business as usual for Pasadena— another day, another impressive win and a few more records broken. But this time it also meant a Division title and, if everything falls into place, perhaps a shot at the Southern California Championship.
