Here are a few observations from Damon's vantage point on the sidelines:
Sierra was able to move the ball, but they had too many turnovers (including two interceptions and one fumble that I recall). Quarterback Andy Bryner seemed out of sync. He had some receivers open but misfired on several occasions. Sierra also failed to capitalize on several great scoring opportunities inside the red zone, including a first and goal from inside the five yard line that turned into a fourth-and-goal from the half yard line. Delta's defense was able to hold the Wolverines on this and several other fourth downs.
Delta had a good amount of success on offense, led by freshman QB Dan Taylor. Taylor threw for two touchdowns and ran another 70 yards for Delta's first TD. He has some great receivers to throw to, led by sophomores Tony McPherson and Wesley Williams. Look for a story on Williams in the next couple of days. The offensive line for Delta played a big role in their success, giving Taylor the time he needed and opening holes for Delta's running backs.
The field was wet from the rains of the previous night and the wind howled throughout the game, but this didn't seem to have a huge effect on either team (with the exception of maybe the kickers and punters).
I think Sierra was a better team than they showed on Saturday, but Delta's entire team played hard and earned the big win. Delta's defense has come a long way since I saw them in week 2 or 3 against Monterey Peninsula (a game they lost 38-34).
Congratulations to both teams for a great season and to the sophomores from both squads, thank you for being part of JC football). We'll miss you.
