Antelope Valley Football Begins 58th Season

Yes, AVC was 5-5 (4-4 in conference), but may have been one of the best .500 teams in the state in many years. Even after a three point loss at Victor Valley in a game AVC had well in hand and another one where Grossmont, which would go on to nearly win the state championship, had to win in the last seconds, the Marauders were still being considered for a bowl berth.

A third straight loss to end the season, however, against Desert ended any and all hopes. And from that team, 27 Marauders return, including 16 starters, making this the most experienced Marauder team in 20 years. Of those 16, 13 were starters sometime during the season on defense, and seven started to face Desert in the final game of the season.

Included in the returners are first team All-Foothill Conference selections (interestingly all offensive players) Josh King (OL, 6-0, 315, SO, Lancaster; Antelope Valley '03), DeAndré Day (TE, 6-4, 210, SO, Rosamond; Rosamond '94) and placekicker Justin Miranda (PK, 5- 10, 160, SO, Lancaster; Lancaster '03). Second teamers returning include Gregory Gibson (DE, 6-0, 215, SO, Lancaster; Lancaster '03) and Jerry Williams (DB, 5-10, 155, SO, Palmdale; Highland '02).

Antelope Valley College football team has begun its pre-season for the 58th season of Marauder Football with 72 players on the roster, including 48 from area high schools in AVC's recruiting district. If including players from AVC's "contiguous recruiting districts" the number goes to 52. The total includes 25 returners from last season and two from 2002. A complete first roster is attached.

The Marauders preseason schedule will be as follows:

Sat., Aug. 14 — Shorts and helmets, 8:30 a.m.
Mon, 8-16 thru Sat., 8-21 — Full pads, 8:30 a.m.
Mon, 8-23 thru Fri, 8-27 — Full pads, 3 p.m.

**Wed., 8-25 is Photo Day beginning a 2 p.m.

Sat., 8-28 -- Full pads, 5 p.m.
Mon, 8-30 thru Thu., 9-2 — Full pads, 3 p.m.

All practices will be held at AVC.

AVC Head Coach Brent Carder enters his 35th season with a 186-158-5 lifetime record, a mark which ranks him third in the nation for active coaches. Carder led teams have won two state championships, seven conference championships and 11 bowl bids.

Earlier this summer, AVC added two assistant coaching positions, a move that still only puts them in the middle of the Foothill Conference pack from number of coaches. But here are a few other numbers which show from an experience standpoint, the staff is anything but middle of the pack. The nine Marauder coaches have 217 years of coaching experience between them. AVC coaches have spent 80 years head coaching. Of the five assistants which have already been at AVC, the one with the least tenure is Lon Boyett with but nine years with the Marauders. Of the five which worked together at Antelope Valley High School, George Fetters worked with Brent Newcomb for 18 seasons, Chad Shrout four years, Boyett two years and Walter Briggs III for a season.

The Marauder coaching staff includes Frank Blua (27th season, Assistant Head Coach, Running Backs), Joe Watts (19th year, Defensive Backs), Mike Martinez (15th year, Offensive line), George Fetters (10th season, Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line), Lon E. Boyett (Ninth season, Offensive coordinator/tight ends), Walter Briggs III (First season, Wide Receivers), Brent Newcomb (First season, Special Teams Coordinator, Linebackers) and Chad Shrout (First season, Defensive Line).

No changes in the schedule this season, except for the normal flopping of home teams. For the first time in 16 years, AVC will not play a 7 p.m. home game. The Marauders open against Central Valley champions, Reedley College (Last year: 9-2, 5-0; lost to CC San Francisco, 27-21, in North Championship Bowl).

The 2004 Marauder Football Schedule follows:
