San Mateo Over Chabot, 25-6

Joe Griffin rushed for 210 yards on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns as College of San Mateo opened the 2004 football season with a 25-6 victory over crossbay rival Chabot in the first game on the Bulldogs' new artificial FieldTurf facility.

CSM led 12-0 at the half on second quarter scores by Griffin and Shawn Sopoaga.  Chabot started the third quarter with a 57-yard drive capped by Dennis Void's seven-yard run to pull within 12-6.  CSM frosh linebacker Stephen Boschetti out of Hillsdale High blocked the PAT kick to keep the Bulldogs up by a TD.

San Mateo sewed up the non-conference victory with fourth quarter tallies by Sean Connor on a 10-yard run with 7:36 left and a 75-yard sprint by Griffin with 1:53 to play.  Griffin is a 6-0, 196-pound sophomore running back out of El Camino High.  Connor rushed for 41 yards on seven carries as CSM rolled up 273 yards on the ground.

San Mateo totaled 386 yards of offense and held the Gladiators to 184.

Sophomore linebacker Dominic Vargas out of Capuchino High set the defensive tone with two first quarter sacks, the second resulting in a fumble recovery by sophomore lineman Josh Tuitupou from Menlo-Atherton.  Vargas also made several other key tackles in the game.

CSM sophomore quarterback Dion Pickett from Galileo High completed four of 11 passes for 74 yards and rushed for 24 yards.  Back-up QB Kevin Linnell (frosh from Kennedy of Fremont) completed three of four for 40 yards.

"It was always the game plan to use two quarterbacks," CSM coach Larry Owens said. "We're fine at that position."

Sophomore tight end Brent Tenbruggencate (6-5, 245) from Serra led Bulldogs receivers with three catches for 62 yards.

Owens explained why San Mateo didn't throw very often:  "We try to take what the defense gives us.  They're a pressure defense.  But I thought our passing game would be a little bit better."

CSM extended its winning streak to four games and has now won 11 of its last 12 contests over the past two seasons.  The Bulldogs visit College of the Sequoias in Visalia next Saturday at 6 p.m.

-- Griffin's 210 yards was just short of CSM's single game rushing record of 227 set by Leonard Morris in 1987 against San Jose City College.
