SWJCFC Preview: Blinn College

This is the first in a series of SWJCFC team previews by contributing writer, Mike Montfort. Brad Franchione, the former defensive line coach at Texas A&M University-Commerce and the son of Texas A&M University head coach Dennis Franchione, replaced Scott Maxfield. Maxfield went to Henderson State after posting a 20-10 record with two playoff appearances and a bowl win in three seasons. Franchione inherits a team that won the 2004 Sea Island Golden Isles Bowl Classic.

NOTES: New athletic director at Blinn is Greg Hinze, former assistant athletic director for marketing and operations at Sam Houston State. Hinze, hired in late June, replaced Kevin Steele, who became AD at California Baptist University…..Bucs have only three home dates and won't open at Spencer Stadium until the fifth playing week (September 24)….Franchione said four players are battling for the starting QB job, including sophomore Joe Danna, and freshmen Brad Guidry and Chris Webb…Freshman WR Kevin Ferguson is related to Green Bay Packer / Texas A&M / Tyler JC WR Robert Ferguson…..WR Driver is a cousin of Packers' Donald Driver….Beechum was a 198-pound weight class state champion powerlifter (1545 pounds in the series) and rushed for 25 TD his senior season….Beechum scored 8 TD from 50-plus yards during Carthage's first six games last year (95, 77, 70, 65, 60, 51 (2), 50.….Ennis DL Greg Jones, Boyd QB Garrett Tidwell, and Bay City LB Terrance Flagg were Blinn signees who played in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game July 26 at San Antonio.

Mike Montfort is a teacher, free-lance sportswriter, part-time sports broadcaster, sports statistician and historian based in Corsicana, Tx.  For 12 years, he's worked on Navarro College football broadcasts in Corsicana and helped to compile Bulldog statistics.
