NW Miss Getting Ready for Opener

After several weeks of preparation, the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers will get the chance to see if their hard work has paid off when they open the 2005 season Thursday, Sept. 1 against the East Central Warriors in Decatur. Ole Miss signee, offensive lineman Lance Lee (pictured), could have an immediate positive impact on Pippin's squad.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. with live radio coverage provided by WQLJ FM 93.7.

The contest will also mark the debut of new Northwest Head Coach Randy Pippin. Pippin replaced legendary coach Bobby Franklin in May.

Northwest, which is ranked pre-season No. 14 in the country by the NJCAA, is coming off a 7-2 season. The Rangers lost those games by a combined four points and finished third in the MACJC north division with a record of 4-2.

Freshmen will be a key to Northwest's success this season. The Rangers return 17 sophomores from last year's team. Ten of those returnees are on the defensive side of the ball.

Since 1965, Northwest is 25-15-1 in season-opening games, including a 14-12 nail-biting victory against East Central last year in Senatobia.

The Rangers have won the last six meetings against the Warriors. East Central's last victory in the series came in 1997 when they defeated Northwest 28-27 in Decatur.
