Mission Conference Media Day Recap

Defending Mission Conference champions Long Beach City College and Saddleback College have been selected as favorites to repeat as champs in their respective divisions in the 2005 Mission Conference preseason media poll announced today at the conference's media day lunch at Orange Coast College.

Long Beach collected 62 points, including six first-place votes, to narrowly edge Mt. San Antonio College with 60 points for the top spot in the American Division.

Last season, LBCC and Mt. SAC shared American Division title with identical 4-1 records. Long Beach closed the season with a 7-5 overall record, while Mt. SAC was 8-3. The Vikings advanced to the semifinals of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

Fullerton College (47 points), Palomar (41), Riverside (26), and Pasadena (16) round out the American Division poll.

Saddleback totaled 66 points and six first-place votes to beat out El Camino College with 61 points for the No. 1 spot in the National Division.

Saddleback cruised through Mission Conference play with a 5-0 division record and advanced to the 2004 Southern California Championship game. The Gauchos fell to eventual state champ College of the Canyons in that game and closed the year with an 11-2 overall record.

Santa Ana College (44), Cerritos College (37), Orange Coast (25), and Golden West College (19) complete the National Division poll.

The 2005 season gets underway on Friday, September 2 when El Camino travels to Citrus College for a 7 pm non-conference game. The rest of the Mission Conference kicks off its schedule on Saturday, September 3. Long Beach opens up at Ventura College in a 5 pm game.
