Foothill Conference Notebook (Wk 2)

The Foothill Conference has proved one thing, it is unpredictable as four teams fell from the ranks of the unbeaten. Two teams remain winless but they lost very close games. So as conference play begins this Saturday, intense battles loom ahead.

Mt. San Jacinto (2-0) - Plays at Grossmont. The Eagles are certainly flying high as they have the Foothill's number one ranked QB in Freshman Matt Ticich. All Ticich as done is complete nearly 60% of his passes with an average 311-yards and thrown for five TD's with 3 INT in the season first two games. WR Chris Kehne is Ticich's favorite target as he has caught 17 passes for 191-yards and 2 TD's. Jake Deifer has caught 7 passes for 160-yards and 2 TD's of his own.

"It is nice to start the season undefeated," Coach Ed Carberry said. "We are pleased with the progress we have so far.

MSJC defeated LA Valley 35-14 with Ticich going 18 of 36 for 336-yards and 3 TD's. WR Pat Stearns caught 4 passes for 85-yards and a TD.

Coach Carberry is looking forward to playing Grossmont. "Grossmont brings a good all-around team to play," Carberry said. "We have to ready for them in all phases of the game."

Game time is 3 pm, Saturday at Grossmont.


Victor Valley (1-1) - Plays vs. San Bernardino Valley. Was upended by LA Southwest 35-15. LB Steve Daborski gained a Player of Week nod with 6 assisted tackles, a pass deflection, and a tackle for a loss. RB Antoine Randolph is among the conference leaders in rushing with 164-yards on 23 carries and 2 TD's. QB Mark Moore is not too far behind him with 114-yards on 27 carries and 2 TD's of his own. Though the air, Moore is 12 of 29 for 149-yards with 1 TD and 1 INT in two games. 

The Rams are leading the conference in rushing offense with a 323-yard average through the first two games. Kicker Josh Latunski is among the leaders with 6 of 7 in extra points and 3 of 4 in field goals.

Game time is 1 pm, Saturday vs. San Bernardino Valley.


San Diego Mesa (1-1) - Plays at Desert. The Olympians ran into a tough Santa Ana squad and lost 52-14. But QB Jake Santos is second in the conference with a 57 completion percentage, 4 TD's, 3 INT's and 479-yards. S D Mesa is also second in the conference in total passing.

Game time is 7 pm, Saturday vs. Desert.


San Bernardino Valley (1-1) - Plays at Victor Valley. Pounded LA Pierce 41-26 last weekend. QB Ryan Rising led the way by going 14 of 25 for 245-yards and 2 TDs. DB Wes Montgomery anchored the defense by having 4 tackles, an interception and caused a fumble.

The Wolverines are third in the conference in rushing defense by holding teams to 87.5 per game. Rising is the number 4 QB in the conference with a 50 % completion rate, with 3 TD's and 3 INTs.

Game time is 1 pm, Saturday at Victor Valley.


Southwestern (1-1) - Plays vs. Antelope Valley. Lost a close one to East LA 9-6. The Jaguars have the number 1 defense in total yards holding opponents to 175-yards per game. Freshman RB Michael Byrd is among the conference leaders gaining 148-yards on 34 carries but no touchdowns as of yet. Travis Crawford has two interceptions and is among the conference leaders in that category.  

QB Robert Riggs is third in the conference in passing with a 64% completion rating and 209-yards per game average.

Game time is 5 pm, Saturday vs. Antelope Valley.


Desert (1-1) - Plays vs. San Diego Mesa. The Roadrunners won a tough game over Riverside 31-24. AJ Scott is among the conference leaders with 172-yards on 47 carries and a touchdown. Scott is also the conference leader in total yards with 147.5 yards per game. But the Roadrunners are toward the bottom in total defense as they give up 453-yards per game.

Game time is 7 pm, Saturday vs. San Diego Mesa.


Grossmont (1-1) - Plays vs. Mt. San Jacinto. The Griffins fell to the number one ranked Canyons 32-22. RB Derrel Hutsona had 219 total yards against Canyons; these yards included a 91-yard kickoff return and a 54-yard punt return for a TD. LB Matt Westrick had a team high 12 tackles in a losing cause. Hutsona also leads the conference 46-yards per average.

QB Reilly Murphy has 58% completion rate and has 165.5-yards per game average.

Game time is 3 pm, Saturday vs. Mt San Jacinto.


Chaffey (0-2) - Bye. The Panthers lost to El Camino 34-24. RB James Davis is the team's leading rusher but has yet to break 100-yards in a game as he averages 47-yards per game

But Davis does have 2 TD'. Casey Hansen is 18 of 56 for 300-yards but no touchdowns but he has been picked off 5 times.


Antelope Valley (0-2) - Plays at Southwestern. The Marauders maybe winless, but Head Coach Brent Carder sees a bright future for his team. AVC lost a close game to Glendale 21-17.

"The team made a real improvement this week," Coach Carder said. "That's really what you hope for this level. Of course you want to get a win every week but it is good that you improve."

RB Dominic Cornelius leads the team in rushing with a 54.4 per game average and a TD. QB John Taylor has settled in at starter, for the season he is 16 of 35 with 219-yards, a TD but no interceptions.

Coach Carder is looking forward to facing Southwestern.

"It is always a good game when we play Southwestern," Coach Carder said. "We are both coming off close losses, and we are looking to playing them."

Game time is 5 pm, Saturday at Southwestern.
