NE Mississippi Battles for Win Over Holmes

BOONEVILLE --- The 2005 MACJC football season got started here Thursday night in a game that pitted the Holmes Community College Bulldogs versus the Northeast Mississippi Community College Tigers. The Bulldogs battled to the end but fell 20-13 in the North Division opener.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard first when Bruce Hall found Robert Fox on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 8:57 left in the first quarter. Jay Roberts' kick put the Tigers up 7-0.

The Bulldogs answered the Tiger score with one of its own when sophomore quarterback Jerimy Watson found a streaking Chris Herron down the middle of the field for a 64-yard touchdown. Matthew Powell's extra point tied the score with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter.

Northeast added a field goal with 1:08 left in the first quarter as Roberts booted a 24 yarder.

The Tigers added a field goal to open the second half from Roberts, this time from 45 yards with 8:42 left in the quarter giving the Tigers the 13-7 lead.

Northeast added a touchdown later in the quarter when Hall found Gilbert McThunnel on a 15-yard touchdown strike. Roberts kick made the score 20-7 with 2:17 left in the third.

The Bulldogs took advantage of a Tiger turnover in the second half when Orlando Teague intercepted Hall at the Tiger 30 and returned it to the 26.

Backup quarterback Caleb Easter then called his own number twice to the 11 before a bad snap forced the Bulldogs back to the 25. On third-and-25, Easter found Jeremy Packer in the end zone. Powell's extra point was no good.

Watson finished the night 8-of-14 for 100 yards and one touchdown while Easter was 3-of-6 for 43 yards and one touchdown. Chris Herron caught two passes for 71 yards and a touchdown while Da'Varius Jackson had four catches for 34 yards. Packer had one caught for 25 yards and a touchdown.

The Bulldogs host the Northwest Rangers on Thursday, Sept. 29. Game time is 7 p.m.
