Foothill Conference Roundup (wk 4)

The Foothill Conference is as competitive as ever. Grossmont and Mt. San Jacinto have the best overall records at 3-1 but in terms of conference play, Grossmont is the pacesetter at 2-0. But San Bernardino Valley and Chaffey are right behind with 1-0 records.

Grossmont (1-0, 3-2) - Plays at San Bernardino Valley. The Griffens came up with a 31-6 victory over Southwestern last Saturday. RB Derrell Hutsona led the way with 164 yards on 16 carries and a TD. Hutsona leads the conference is total yards with an average of 193.8 yards per game and 5 TD's on the year.

On defense FS Terry Mixon came up with an interception, 5 tackles and broke up 3 passes. LB Magnum Mauga had 8 tackles and pressured Southwestern's QB all game. And DE Roderkus Wright had 4 tackles, a sack and pressured the QB as well.

As a team, Grosssmont currently leads the conference in total offense with 451.5 yards per game and 18 TD.

Plays at San Bernardino Valley, game time is Saturday at 1 pm.

San Bernardino Valley (1-0, 2-1) - Plays at Grossmont. The Wolverines had the bye last week but they did not stand pat. "We took the bye week to work on fundamentals," Coach Pat Meech said. "Making sure that the players remember the little things that we need to do during the season."

RB Kendrick Harris leads the team in rushing with 61-yards per game average and 2 TDs. "Kendrick is a very physical runner, he has a very good style of running," Coach Harris said.

QB Ryan Rising is having a solid year, with a 51% completion rating and 145 yards per game average. He also has 4 TDs, but has 3 INTs too.

Plays Grossmont, game time is Saturday at 1 pm.

Chaffey (1-0, 1-2) - Plays at Southwestern. The Panthers defeated Victor Valley 31-6 to win its first game of the season. RB Bernard Payton made his season debut memorable by rushing for 131 on 14 carries and scoring 3 TDs in the game.

QB Casey Hansen has averaged 185 yards per game, but has 6 INTs against 4 TDs

Chaffey is currently third in both team offense and defense. On offense the Panthers have a 370 yards per game average and 8 TDs, while defensively they give up 337.3 yards per game and 9 TDs.

Plays at Southwestern, game time is Saturday at 5pm.

Mt. San Jacinto (1-1, 3-1) - Plays at Antelope Valley. The Eagles won a close one 14-12 over Desert. DB Scott James had 6 tackles but none bigger than the tackle on the 1-yard line to preserve the win. On top of that, James had 2 interceptions in the game. For the season James has 6 INTs in 4 games to lead the conference.

RB Kevin Slaughter provided the winning margin by scoring a two-point conversion. In the game, Slaughter rushed for 115 yards on 25 carries and a TD. Overall he leads the team in rushing with a 67.3 yards per game average and 4 TDs.

QB Matt Ticich still leads the conference in passing with 297 yards per game average and 8 TDs. WR Chris Kehne has 19 catches 240 yards and 2 TDs to lead the team.

Plays at Antelope Valley, game time is Saturday at 7 pm.

San Diego Mesa (1-1, 2-2) - Bye. The Olympians defeated Antelope Valley 34-16 last Saturday. QB Jake Santos had a good game by going 14 of 27 for 257 yards and 5 TDs. Overall Santos is leading the conference with 11 TD passes and second in the conference with a 229.3 yards per game passing average.

"Jake is just a great athlete and is learning the position very well," Head Coach Martin Moss said. "We are happy to have a player of his ability on our team. He has done a good job for us."

Mesa is headed for the bye this weekend but Moss has plans for his team. "We need the bye to get players healthy and we can go over fundamentals," Moss said. "We have gotten off to a fair start this season, and we just want to get better and get more positive play."

Desert (1-1, 2-2) - Plays at Victor Valley. The Roadrunners where one play away from defeating Mt. San Jacinto, but fell 14-12. RB AJ Scott is averaging 106 yards per game to lead the team in rushing. Scott also leads the conference in rushing touchdowns with 5. Anthony Hall has done his share with a 68.5 per game average and a TD.

Overall Desert is second in the conference in rushing offense with a 247.8 yard per game average and 10 TDs and leads the conference in pass defense with 171.3 yards per game and 5 INTs.

Plays Victor Valley, game time is Saturday at 1 pm.

Southwestern (1-1, 2-2) - Plays Chaffey. The Jaguars were beaten by Grossmont 31-6. RB Larry Richardson is among the conference leaders in rushing with a 78 yards per game average. But he does not have a rushing touchdown; Richardson has made a difference in all-purpose yards as he has gained 164.3 total yards per game.

The Jaguars also has the conference's second best rushing difference with 133.9 yards per game average and have given up 9 TDs and have given up a 20.8-points against average.

Hosts Chaffey, game time is Saturday at 5 pm.

Victor Valley (0-2, 1-3) - Plays Desert. The Rams came out the short end of a 38-6 defeat at the hands of Chaffey. Victor Valley still leads the conference in total defense by only giving up 298-yards per game, but has given up 14 TDs.

The Rams also boast the 1-2 rushing combination of Antoine Randolph and Erik Hardeman. Randolph has a 71.8 rushing per game average while Hardeman has 70.5 yards per gained. This has propelled the Rams to the conference lead in total rushing with a 249 yards per game average and 7 team touchdowns.

Antelope Valley (0-2, 0-4) - Plays Mt. San Jacinto. The Marauders lost a tough one to San Diego Mesa 34-16. "We just let another one get away," Head Coach Brent Carder said. "But we see improvement every week, with this young team."

RB Don Green emerged last game at the tailback position, which pleased Coach Carder. "He (Green) has a breakout game. It was nice to get production from the tailback position. This is a young team, we start 16 freshman overall. So they are learning to play at this level."

FB's Dominic Cornelius and Richard Watkines 48.8 yards per game and 50.3 yards per game respectively and have one TD each.
