Against the Trojans, the league's top rushing defense going into the game, Montgomery had a breakout night, gaining 248 yards on 19 carries and scoring two touchdowns to lead the Tigers (3-0, 3-0) to a 42-0 win over Delta.
Northeast led 28-0 on the strength of four second quarter touchdowns. Freshman receiver Ralph Curtis of Taylorsville got the ball rolling with an 11-yard TD run on a reverse play. Rookie quarterback Bruce Hall of Milton, Fla. then tossed a six yard touchdown pass to sophomore Robert Fox of Calhoun City to give Northeast a 14-0 lead.
Montgomery got into the act with a three yard scoring plunge with 4:28 left in the period, and then with only thirty seconds remaining on the first half clock, Hall threw to freshman receiver Corey Lawrence of Horn Lake in the back of the end zone to complete the offensive explosion. Sophomore Jay Roberts of Ridgeland added his fourth straight PAT.
In the second half Northeast began to work on the clock, but after Delta downed a punt at the Northeast two yard line, Montgomery turned in the highlight of the night. Taking a handoff and running off tackle, Montgomery broke into the secondary and raced 98 yards for a touchdown. Roberts PAT extended the Tiger lead to 35-0.
With only 1:45 left in the quarter sophomore Dee Harden of Leighton, Ala. scored the final touchdown of the night on a 30-yard jaunt. Roberts closed out the scoring with his sixth straight successful PAT.
Northeast ventures out of North Division play Saturday, Oct. 15 to take on the Jones Bobcats in Ellisville. Kickoff for the game is set for 2 p.m. The Tigers return home Thursday, October 20 to battle division rival Northwest. Kickoff at Keenum Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
