NFL Draft Recap

There weren't as many players with JC backgrounds selected in the recent NFL draft as we anticipated. However, three ex-JC guys went in the first round! Still more are signing free agent contracts as the days go by.

Massive offensive lineman Bryant McKinnie (Lackawanna/Miami) slipped to the seventh overall choice by the Minnesota Vikings, but he will be an offensive line cornerstone for them for many years. QB Dante Culpepper has to be walking around with a big smile.

Seven picks later Jeremy Shockey, the slick tight end from N.E. Oklahoma by way of Miami, went to the New York Giants .  Jim Fassel's gang used a 4th round pick to move up a notch to insure getting the 6-4, 252-pound Shockey.

Green Bay moved up eight spots to pick Javon Walker (Jones Co./Florida State) and he figures to fit right in immediately with Terry Glenn and last year's great pick, Robert Ferguson (Tyler/Texas A&M).  The Packers will surely be able to stretch the field with that trio.  They especially liked Walker's athleticism (he played three years of minor league baseball) and speed.

Seattle's Seahawks nailed down a pair of JC grads in the second round , picking running back Maurice Morris (Fresno/Oregon) and defensive end Anton Palepoi (UNLV/Dixie).

Morris is slated to back up Shaun Alexander and his speed and soft hands will be a change from Shaun Alexander's power running.  Palepoi is a fine rusher off the edge, something the Hawks have been missing.

The third round found ex-Coffeyville/Purdue defensive end, Akin Ayodele, going to Jacksonville and defensive tackle Dorsett Davis (Mississippi Delta/Miss State) to Denver.  Ayodele is expected to be moved to outside backer because of his 6-2, 257 size and Davis should be a backup on the defense as he adds weight to his 6-5, 304-pound frame.

A surprise fourth-round choice was guard Travis Scott, selected by the St. Louis Rams.  The former Mesa/Arizona State (J.C. Grid-Wire All-American) played just 13 games at ASU due to injuries, but the Rams look at the 6-6, 311-pounder as a strong backup while he gains experience.  They like his size and toughness.

Kevin McCadam, a safety from Grossmont/Virginia Tech, one that we missed in our preview, was a surprise fifth-round choice of the Atlanta Falcons.  Do you suppose his former teammate, Mr. Vick, put in a few choice words for him?  McCadam should soon be a starter at free safety.

Other picks included RB Josh Scobey (N.E. Oklahoma/Kansas State) in the sixth round by the Arizona Cardinals; CB Chris Cash (Palomar/Southern California) in the sixth round by the Detroit Lions; CB Demarcus Faggins (Navarro/Kansas State) in the sixth round by the Houston Texans; and FB Rock Cartwright (Trinity Valley/Kansas State) in the seventh round by the Washington Redskins; DT Howard Green (SW Miss./LSU) in the sixth round; DE Brett Keisel (Snow; BYU) in the seventh round by Pittsburgh.
