Garden City's Top Incoming Freshmen

Our Garden City CC football insiders recently provided the scoop on the Broncbusters' class of incoming freshmen. Some of them are likely to break into the depth chart this fall.

DeAngelo Green
5-9, 185
Hutchinson, KS

Will be third string RB behind Kay Jay Harris and Tyson Thompson. Shrine Bowl selection, All-State class 6A, All-Area.. Early commit to Kansas Univ., but they backed off him late. A tough loss for Hutchinson CC.

John Christenson
Offensive Tackle
6-5, 265
Concordia, KS

Tore up his knee in basketball, so will spend this year rehabbing. Every JC and D2 school in Kansas was after him. All-State, All-Class 4A. Shrine Bowl selection, All-Area Top 33. John's dad played for KU about 20 years ago.

Jevon Kastle
Offensive Line
6-4, 295
Phillipsburg, KS

Overshadowed by Andrew Ubben (OL/DL). Very agile and aggressive. Has a good chance to start at offensive guard in 2002. Was 1st Team All-Area class 3A, Honorable Mention 3A All-Class.

Austin Wentling
Wide Receiver
6-3, 180
Quivera, KS

From an 8-man school. Will have a good chance to start in 2002. A tall, talented WR that was perhaps the state's top high school WR in 2001. 1st Team 8-Man, All-Area Top 22. 49 receptions for 964 yards and 21 TDs as a senior.

Justin Wagoner
6-0, 200
Wellington, KS

Will be the 4th string fullback in 2002. His brother, Jason, is a redshirt tailback on the GCCC team. All-State Top 22, 1st Team 4A, All-Area Top 22. Shrine Bowl selection.

DeForrester Townsend
6-0, 175
Kansas City, KS

His high school team only threw the ball eight times in 2001. Could play any number of positions. He may provide quarterback depth this year, but could back up elsewhere too.

Darko Scaro
Offensive Lineman
6-2, 260
Shawnee Mission, KS

Played high school ball at a large 6A school in Kansas City. Will likely see action at GCCC in 2002. Was Coach Tim Schaffner's #1 signee in NE Kansas. Scaro is a native of Bosnia like last year's GCCC PK and Purdue signee, Berin Lacevic. "Darko is build like a large file cabinet," according to one coach.

Emory Buncome
6-1, 210
Wichita, KS

Probably one of six ILBs on the GCCC team in 2002. 1st Team All-City (Wichita). Honorable Mention Class 6A.

Mike Eckerman
6-0, 255
Wichita, KS

Was the only center signed and none are returning for GCCC. Will be a lock for 2nd string. He passes the eyeball test for what a center should look like. Honorable Mention All-Class 6A, 1st Team All-City.

TJ Staab
6-2, 230
Plainville, KS

Was a possible D1 prospect out of high school, but for some reason nothing materialized. GCCC signed a bunch of FB/LB types because they can play a number of positions. Honorable Mention Class 2A, Honorable Mention 2A All-Area.

Two signees that could be sleepers...

AJ Mills
Offensive Tackle
6-5, 270
Abiline, KS

Brother of former GCCC starting OT, Travis Mills, who signed with Rutgers a couple years back.

Thomas Carter
5-9, 185
Wichita, KS

May be the fourth corner on depth chart. All-State. Very highly recruited by all the JCs in Jayhawk Conference. Could have been D1 out of high school if not for grades.

Other note:

Cornerback Sean Petty (5-9, 170) was a late qualifier, who signed with Purdue this year. It says a lot about GCCC's depth at corner, since Petty was probably the 4th best corner on the squad and he landed a D1 ride.
