Fullerton, El Camino: Picks for Mission Conf.

Fullerton and El Camino College have been tabbed to win their respective divisions according to voters of the 2006 Mission Football Conference preseason media poll. The rankings were announced Thursday afternoon following the conference's annual media day lunch at Orange Coast College.

With 62 points, Fullerton edged defending co-champion Long Beach City College (55 pts.) to take the top spot in the American Division poll.

Fullerton went 8-3 last season and finished third in the American Division with a 3-2 mark. Their 2005 season came to an end after a 50-24 loss to Bakersfield in the opening round of the Southern California playoffs.

Five of the six American Division teams received at least one first-place vote.

Defending co-champ Riverside (53), Palomar (51), Mt. San Antonio (39), and Pasadena (13) round out the list.

El Camino grabbed 12 of 13 first-place votes to total 76 points and run away with the top spot in the National Division poll.

El Camino had the finest season of any Mission Conference team last year, compiling an 11-1 overall record while going 5-0 in the National Division. Their season ended with a 52-43 second-round playoff loss to eventual state and national champion Grossmont College.

Saddleback picked up the other lone first-place vote and collected 56 points to take the No. 2 position. Santa Ana (52), Cerritos (45), Orange Coast (29), and Golden West (15) complete the National Division poll.

The 2006 season gets underway on Friday, September 1 when Santa Ana hosts Compton in a 7 pm non-conference game. The rest of the Mission Conference kicks off its schedule on Saturday, September 2.
