NJCAA Official Poll (9/12/06)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 12, 2006) – For the second consecutive week, Pearl River Community College sits atop the NJCAA Football Poll. The Wildcats improved their record to 2-0 with a 58-10 victory over Coahoma Community College (Miss.) on Sept. 7.

Pearl River was also voted to the top spot in the 2006 NJCAA Preseason Poll.

Pearl River has dominated their first two opponents outscoring their opposition 101-16. Pearl River has the fourth-best passing attack in the NJCAA averaging 245.5 yards a contest. Yet Pearl River's 58-10 victory over Coahoma last week was due in large part to their ground attack. The Wildcats rushed for 278 yards as sophomore Seth Hayden and freshman Bubba Kirksey both carried 15 times for career-high totals of 140 and 109 yards, respectively. Hayden finished the game with 172 yards of offense and two touchdowns.

Hayden leads the nation in rushing touchdowns with five and his 32 total points ranks second in the NJCAA for non-kickers. The Wildcat offense ranks second in the NJCAA averaging 473.5 total offensive yards per contest.

The Wildcat defense has been fierce this season as well forcing eight turnovers (six interceptions, two fumbles) in their first two contests­. The Wildcat secondary has yielded six interceptions as defensive backs Gene Anderson (Pre-Season NJCAA All-American), Brandon Burns and Josh Wiley have each picked-off two passes. Anderson and Burns have both returned an interception for a touchdown as well.
Pre-season All-American linebacker Donte Spires leads the squad with 13 solo tackles and 11 assisted tackles.

Pearl River hosts third-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Thursday, Sept. 2, which is the NJCAA Football Game of the Week.

Butler Community College (Kan.) claimed the No. 2 ranking for the second consecutive week. The Grizzlies improved their record to 3-0 on the season with a 31-21 win over Jayhawk Conference foe Dodge City Community College (Kan.) on Sept. 9. Butler jumped out to an early 28-6 lead and managed to hold off a late Dodge City comeback.

Paul Eck , Butler's first-team pre-season All-American quarterback, completed 13 of 24 passes for 204 yards. Eck completed four passes to Quinn Cunningham, three to Matt Wykes and two each to Wallace Franklin and Andre Jones. Eck ranks sixth in the nation in passing yards per game averaging 222 yards per contest.

Linebacker Austin Panter led the Grizzlies with 11 tackles (four solo) and one sack, while Tommy Phelps had nine tackles (six solo). J. D.
Douglas had an interception, his second of the season. This week, Butler travels to Independence Community College (Kan.) to face the Pirates Saturday, Sept. 16.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College also remained in the same position as last week receiving 89 votes for the No. 3 slot. The Bulldogs posted a 42-7 victory over Northeast Mississippi Community College last week. The Gulf Coast defense has yet to give up a touchdown this season resulting in the Bulldogs outscoring their first two opponents 110-7.

MGCCC has the third-best rushing offense in the country gaining 292.5 yards per game and the third-best total offense producing 435 total yards of a contest.Running back Larry Warner has rushed for 283 yards and three touchdowns and boasts the NJCAA's ninth-best rushing average of 141.5 yards per game.
