Saddleback Holds Top Spot

Saddleback rode the jet legs of P.T. Gates in the second half of their battle with El Camino and scored a 42-37 triumph to retain the number one spot in the weekly J.C. Grid-Wire rankings.

With his team trailing 31-14 at halftime, Gates turned on a dazzling performance, scoring three times in a 13-minute span on runs of 2, 44 and 45 yards.  He totaled 236 yards on 26 carries.  The Gauchos will face a red-hot Palomar eleven, Saturday at 5pm, in the first round of the Southern California JC playoffs.  Saddleback coach Mark McElroy said, "No one seems to realize how hard it is to go unbeaten.  We are happy to have that one behind us."  El Camino coach John Featherstone remarked, "If all goes well in the next couple of weeks, maybe we will meet again."  Both coaches agreed that it was a tremendous football game.
