San Mateo Knocks Off Sequoias

Shaman Thompson caught a game-ending 25-yard touchdown pass from David Singleton on third down of the first overtime period to give host College of San Mateo a 29-23 victory over visiting College of the Sequoias (7-4) in the second annual Bulldog Bowl Saturday afternoon.

San Mateo, which came into the game ranked seventh in Northern California and 20th in the state, also finished 7-4.

It was a similar finish to last year's inaugural Bulldog Bowl, when a Gil Hernandez field goal gave CSM the victory over Sequoias as time expired.  Sequoias came into this season ranked No. 1 among the state's 72 teams in some pre-season polls.

Singleton, a freshman out of Salesian High, had driven the Bulldogs 61 yards in ten plays to send Saturday's game into overtime with an 8-yard scoring pass to Ed Berry with 41 seconds left.  Berry, a freshman from Serra, was CSM's game MVP with eight receptions for 100 yards.  Thompson, a sophomore from Woodside, had three catches for 47 yards.

Earlier Bill Ring, a CSM freshman defensive back out of St. Francis, recovered a blocked punt on the Giants two-yard line and took it into the end zone.  Ring scored his first San Mateo TD in a game in which his 49ers' Super Bowl winning father Bill Ring, Sr., tossed the opening coin flip and selected MVP awards, in conjunction with Doug Ryan (father of DB Drew Ryan, out of Serra).  Both parents previously starred for CSM.

Sequoias QB Andre Sloan El was the MVP for Sequoias (7-4), completing 21 of 467 passes for 289 yards and three first half touchdowns, for a 20-13 lead.  San Mateo held the Giants to just a field goal in the second half – and their 41-yard field goal attempt in overtime was wide right.

"This was a great way to end the year," said CSM coach Larry Owens.  "The script was written perfectly for us.  Sequoias is a good team.  Our defense stepped up in the second half and made some big plays."

San Mateo also scored first, after Francisco Ragsdale returned the opening kickoff 44 yards to the Sequoias 39.  Soph wingback Isa Hines (from SF Lincoln) accounted for 28 yards on rushes and receptions before Ronnie Haren carried the final yard for a 7-0 lead three minutes into the game.

Singleton completed 15 of 24 passes for 228 yards and the two final TDs.  CSM produced 362 yards of offense and Sequoias 370 yards in the even game.  Singleton finished the year completing 101 of 176 passes for 1,311 yards and five scores.

Hines (from SF Lincoln) led CSM rushers in the game, with 57 yards on 11 carries and caught three passes for 37 yards.  He paced San Mateo for the season in both categories, with 551 yards on just 48 carries (an outstanding 11.4 average per carry) and eight TDs, plus 32 pass receptions for 436 yards.  That gave him 987 total yards.

CSM was nationally ranked 23rd last week and could move up in the final polls next month.
