Sant Rosa DE Steve Stutsman Recruiting Update

Recruiting isn't an exact science. Schools miss on players every year that go the small-college route and become All-Americans and then go on to fame in the NFL. One player who might be on a similar path is Santa Rosa DE/LB Steve Stutsman who was named a Gridwire All-American and helped lead his team to a bowl win.

"I couldn't have asked for a better season," Stutsman told JCFootball.com recently. "We finished 9-1 and we won our bowl game too (SRJC beat Reedley 21-20). Our hard work really paid off this year and we did what we came out to do.

"It just stinks that we don't have a playoff, because I think we could have played well against anyone."

Stutsman finished the year with 18.5 sacks and received Gridwire All-American honors at defensive end, but that hasn't translated into any real recruiting momentum for him.

"It sucks because I'm under-sized for a defensive end," the 6-3, 240-pound Stutsman said. "I'm a linebacker, but our team needed me to play end so I did. I think that might be why I haven't seen a lot of interest because I didn't have any film of me at linebacker.

"It's okay though, because really all that mattered is what was best for the team."

Stutsman is in the process of setting up a visit to Weber State in the next couple weeks and said he's also hearing from Portland State, Idaho State and Nichols State.

"I don't finish up my degree until May so that might be another reason I haven't gotten any offers yet," Stutsman said. "I really want to get some opportunities at a D-1 school, but if that doesn't happen I'll just be happy to play football for whoever will have me.

"I love the game and I think I can be very successful at the next level."

We'll have more from Stutsman in the coming weeks as we follow his progress during the recruiting season.
