Shackleford surmises the lack of winning finally got to Shaughnessy. "It would be supposition but basically 6 wins in 6 years is why (Shaughnessy stepped down). You work so hard and to not have any success it really starts to eat on you," he said.
Despite Golden West's lack of success in recent years, they recently stopped a 25-game losing streak; they never get out hustled in a game. Shackleford believes his team will continue to have a reputation for hustle and determination. "We work them awful hard and we're working them hard right now. That's just a by-product of hard work," he said.
The last time Golden West had a winning record was in 1991 when they finished 6-4. Despite the long drought, Shackleford's goal is for the Rustlers to be bowl-eligible this season, which means at least 6 wins.
"Our goal is to get into a bowl game and to be bowl-eligible you've got to have 6 wins…we want to be eligible. Whether or not somebody picks (us) is another story," said Shackleford. The goals seem lofty considering the Rustlers are coming off of a 2-8 season last year and went 2 ½ seasons straight without a win. Word on the street, however, is that the number of participants is up dramatically and the attitude is much improved.
Here are some of the players trying to lead a big turnaround in 2002:
QB Porter Lacey (6-5, 240) SO
QB Justin Grimm (6-1, 185) RS-FR Western States HS (CO)
RB Ray Mietkiewicz (6-2, 240) RS-FR Marina HS
RB Jovan Smith (6-1, 235) FR Pacifica HS
RB Brett Spence (5-11, 185) FR Edison HS
TE Jacob Morado (6-3, 245) SO

WR Ryan Partridge (6-2, 210) FR Amador Valley HS
WR Aaron Aska (5-10, 175) RS-SO
WR Brian Sipkovich (6-3, 210) FR Northview HS
Shackleford feels that the biggest improvement on the team is in the offensive line. After finishing last season with only 6 offensive linemen they start this season with 14 on the depth-chart.
