Cal nabs All-American Linebacker

We've seen a plethora of top JC talent commit early this year and Orange Coast LB Shaun Mohler (6-3, 225) became the latest as he committed to Cal linebackers coach Kenwick Thompson on Sunday night and he said it was an easy decision to make.

"I committed last night," Mohler told JCFootball.com on Monday morning. "Coach Thompson was really excited and happy and so were my parents.

"My mom cried a little and she said it was the best Mother's Day present she could have gotten. My grandparents were there and so was my dad. It was just a great night for us."

Mohler finished the 2006 season with 108 tackles, leading the state of California JC's in that category. He's a preseason All-American and he said it was a pretty easy choice when it came down to it.

"I wanted to play in the Pac 10 and the schools is pretty close to home," Mohler said. "It was definitely my parents' number one choice for where I was going to go.

"It's just a great school, they really help their athletes with their academics and I'll need that because it's a tough school and the coaches and I talked about the opportunity to come in and start pretty early because they're losing two linebackers so that was a big plus too."

Mohler will graduate in December and will have three years to play two. He is also versatile enough to play either side (strong or weak) with excellent strength (20 reps of 225 pounds) and speed (4.6).

We'll have more from Mohler once his season starts and he prepares to wrap up his career with the Pirates this fall.
