Saddleback's Clark ready to make his mark

Saddleback always produces top Juco talent every year and a sleeper on the Gauchos heading into the 2007 season is WR Maurice Clark (6-4, 210) who had a solid freshman campaign in 2006. This year, he's working on his speed so he can be the downfield threat that four-year schools are looking for.

"I'm big and I'm physical, but I'm really working hard this year on my speed and my vertical," Clark told recently. "I catch the ball and then I break tackles and run with it.

"I want to get more explosive so I'm working out at Velocity three days a week and then here on campus with my teammates as well. I can tell I'm already getting stronger and faster."

Clark played his high school ball in Lake Elsinor, California and got an offer from Temple to play for the Owls. During his redshirt season, he was asked by the coaching staff to move to safety and since he felt his best position was receiver he called the Saddleback coaches to see if they had a spot open for him.

"During my senior season, when the coaches at Saddleback knew I was heading to Temple they told me that they would always have a spot for me if I wanted to come back," Clark said. "I'm happy I came here and I think I'll have some chances to earn a scholarship after teams get to see my film from last year and possibly this fall."

In 2006, Clark had a solid season posting 30 receptions for over 600 yards and six touchdowns.

On the recruiting front, at this time, Wyoming is the only school to make contact with Clark.

"They've made contact pretty recently, but that's about it so far," Clark said. "I'm hoping with my performance at the combine (in Los Angeles on May 12th) and when I get my film out that more teams will start to take notice of me."

Clark had a solid day at Citrus College two weeks ago. He had a 34-inch vertical and repped 185 pounds 29 times. He didn't run the 40, but consistently times in the 4.5 range.

Because he falls under the 4-2-4 rule, Clark must finish his two-year degree before he leaves Saddleback and he expects to finish up in December and will have two to play two wherever he ends up.

We'll keep track of Clark over the summer and see where things are at concerning his recruitment over the next few months.
