Hernandez decides to join the Lobos

About three weeks ago, JCFootball.com reported that College of the Siskiyous OL Ivan Hernandez (6-7, 280) could be a late 2007 signee and that turned out to be true as he made a commitment this past weekend to the University of New Mexico.

"Yeah I committed to New Mexico on Sunday before I left there," Hernandez told JCFootball.com. "I went down there on an official visit and just loved everything about the area, the school and the coaches.

"I just got a great feeling when I was there and the coaches there were really great and they were excited when I committed because they said they were really needed to add depth to the line and they were really excited to have me with them."

Hernandez was seeing some serious interest from Colorado and had an offer from Western Illinios to play for them, but in the end New Mexico is where he felt at home.

"I felt really comfortable there and I think I'll have a good shot at playing time pretty quickly," Hernandez said. "I'm coming is as the number two left tackle right when I get there and then I'll be able to challenge for time.

"I know they aren't just going to give the job to me, I have to earn it, and I wouldn't want it just handed to me. That isn't right. I need to come in and be better than the guy in front of me or work harder to become better than him.

"I think they have a great program going there and they have a really good chance of going to a bowl and winning the conference. I want to be a part of that. I'm really excited."

Hernandez played in 2005 as a freshman and started every game, but an injury in 2006 forced him to redshirt and that means he'll have three years to play three once he arrives on campus.
