Blinn's Lewis is a playmaker at linebacker

Blinn College is loaded with talent and played a bunch of younger players on a team that won the NJCAA National Championship in 2006. One of the top defenders on head coach Dennis Franchione's roster is LB Sterling Lewis (6-0, 230) and JCFootball.com was able to catch up with the playmaking linebacker and he talked about recruiting and his focus heading into fall.

"It was great being part of the championship team," Lewis said. "I loved getting in and making plays. I split time with a guy last year, but this year it's all mine and I plan on having a big season and to help lead us to another championship."

Lewis, in part time duty, posted 45 tackles and six sacks from his weakside position last year and said he's working really hard on his technique.

"I have good instincts and that really helps me get to the ball and diagnose plays," Lewis said. "I just want to get better at shedding blockers and using my hands better and not letting myself get cut on blocks and stuff.

"We're working extra with the offensive lineman and using our hands better and that can only make us better."

Lewis was a late qualifier out of Copperas Cove High School in Texas and headed to Blinn because of the coaching staff and the competition from the talented players already on the roster.

"I knew coming here it was only going to make me better," Lewis said. "The coaching staff here has a good rep for getting guys moved on and by competing hard every day and being pushed that's only going to help me even more."

On the recruiting front, Arkansas, Louisiana Tech and UAB are the three schools paying the most attention to Lewis.

"All three came to our practices and they've made contact and said they liked me and what skills I can bring to their teams," Lewis said. "I would like to stay as close to home as possible, but I'll go wherever I have the best chance to contribute and play right away."

Lewis will finish his AA in December and will have three years to play two when he arrives on campus.
