OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS (9-24-02)

Here's JC Grid-Wire's weekly look around that nation at some of last weekend's top performances. Two teams in California had two RBs rush for over 100 yards each. And one JC Top 101 linebacker in Mississippi recorded 15 tackles. Here's the full scoop...

QUARTERBACKS

GROSSMONT – Tanner Engstrand (So.), 6-1, 180, completed 21 of 36 tosses for 353 yds and 2 TDs in 38-14 win over Saddleback.  He was 25 of 40 for 317 and 20 pts in the opener vs. Citrus.

BUTTE – Aaron Rodgers (Fr.), 6-2, 195, was 21 of 38 for 351 and 1 TD and ran for 80 yds and 2 scores in 55-42 loss to Fresno.

VENTURA – Jason Beck (Fr.), 6-2, 206, was 15 of 28 for 322 yds and 2 TDs in win over Mt. SAC.

SNOW – Paul Peterson (So.), 6-0, 195, tossed 28 completions in 51 attempts for 295 and 2 scores (87-139-1079-13-5)

RIVERSIDE – Ronnie Hill (So.), 6-2, 220, was 28 of 43 for 290 yds with 2 TDs in 27-24 loss to Mt. San Jacinto.

L.A. SOUTHWEST – Chris Phillips (So.), went 22 of 31 for 287 yds and a pair of scores in 25-22 win over San Diego Mesa

SEQUOIAS – Paul Ferreira (Fr.), 6-0, 173, went 8 for 18 for 285 yds and 5 touchdowns in 45-25 verdict over Yuba.  In the 2nd period he threw 4 TD passes and 239 yds, both school records.

L.A. HARBOR – Cameron Smith (Fr.), 6-3, 190, completed 27 of 41 passes for 281 yds, 4 TDs and a PAT to help get 40-22 win over Orange Coast

CANYONS – Kyle Bauer (So.), appears to have landed the starting role after going 22 of 35 for 263 and 3 TDs against a swarming CERRITOS defense.

FRESNO – Mark Hetherington (So.), 6-2, 210, went 15 of 24 for 259 with 3 TDs.

SANTA BARBARA – Bryan Peterson, 6-0, 190, was 19 of 37 for 252 yds in 24-22 win over Antelope Valley.

PEARL RIVER – Daniel Forrest, 6-2, 210, had a fine night going 21 of 30 for 238 yds and 2 TDs, to earn 13-9 win over East Central

HARPER – Brian McCaslin was 16 of 19 for 233 and 4 TDs in 54-6 rout of Rock Valley

RUNNING BACKS

CERRITOS – Jermaine Whiten (So.), 5-10, 205, set a school record with 308 rushing yds on 21 carries  and TD runs of 72, 13, 7 and 84 yds.  Teammate Josh Herrera (So.), 6-1, 216, added  117 on 14 attempts as the Falcons set a team record of 443 yds rushing.

COFFEYVILLE – Brandon Jacobs (So.), 6-4, 245, rushed for 204 yds on 20 lugs with 33 and 72-yd TDs.

FOOTHILL – Gerald Green rushed for 202 yds against a tough San Mateo defense.

LONG BEACH – Craig Richardson (So.), 5-11, 195, zipped 194 yds and scored 4 times.  He also caught 2 passes for 29 yds.

L.A. HARBOR – James Robinson, 5-10, 225, romped for 182 yds on 32 carries and had a score vs. Orange Coast.

FRESNO – Earl Charles (So.), 6-0, 205, lugged the leather 29 times for 168 yds, scored on runs of 57, 5, and 5. had 54 more on 2 catches and a 23-yd kickoff return for 245 total yds vs. Butte.

PASADENA – Jeremy Hartsfield (So.), 5-11, 185, who is a converted receiver, rambled 167 yds on 27 trips with TDs of 10 and 3, and teammate FB Allen Kennett (So.), 5-10, 225, ploughed 104 on 17 efforts and caught 2 for 22.

PALOMAR – The Comets, like Cerritos, had a pair of RBs exceed the 100-yd mark.  Chris Williams, 5-7, 165, went 161 in 25 and Alex Thompson rushed 20 times for 114 and a pair of tallies.

VENTURA – Marcus Crawford, 6-2, 220, carried 22 times for 160 yds and TDs of 50 and 11 in win over Mt. SAC.

MOORPARK – Greg Morris, 5-9, 180, had 10 carries for 159 yds and scores of 76 and 22 yds in 44-21 win over Santa Ana. Greg is a freshman and weighs 180, while standing 5-9.  He got all of his carries in the 2nd half.

MERCED – Shawn Harris, 5-9, 210, had 26 efforts for 153 yds in 21-13 win over Chabot.

SEQUOIAS – Joe Houck, 6-0, 172, 24 for 143 yds 45-25 over YUBA, who had Norm Freeman knock off 158 on 25 trips.

RECEIVERS

SEQUOIAS – Jacques McCray, 6-0, 150, caught 3 passes, all for TDs and 192 yds.  The scores were 81, 77 and 34 yds.

FRESNO – Willie Johnson (So.), 6-3, 190, caught 13 passes for 180 yds.  He broke records for catches in a game and career TDs. His TDs were of the brilliant sort going 1, 17 and 47.  He's a leaper.

BUTTE – Mark Onibokun, 6-1, 196, nabbed 6 passes for 173 yds and a 60-yd TD.

SNOW – A.J. Smith (So.), grabbed 10 passes for 172 yds and a TD, giving him 3 games stats of 29 catches, 436 yds, 3 TDs.

HARPER – Brian Hare had 6 catches for 125 yds and TDs of 56, 39 and 9 yds.  (He is 23-284-5)

EL CAMINO – Joseph Kensey, 6-3, 185, Fr. had 4 receptions for 134 yds and 3 TDs.

WEST L.A. – Chico Mackey caught 8 passes for 134 yds, Stan Hollis 4 for 111 and Tony Griffin went 96 yds with a pass.

HANCOCK – Joseph Dally caught 9 passes for 118 yds vs. Long Beach.

DEFENSE

BLINN – LB Jeremy Brantley, 5-10, 220, had 13 tackles, 9 solo, and an interception for a TD.

NAVARRO – DE Mike Montgomery, 6-7, 275, had 19 tackles and LB Ken Jones 22 plus a 59-yd pick.

CHAFFEY – DB Tyler Gentis, 6-0, 185, had a school-record 3 interceptions for 58 yds and 2 TDs vs. Citrus.

GROSSMONT – Jordan Alford (Fr.), 5-11, 170, kicked in 7 tackles, 3 pass deflections and returned fumble 67 yds for a TD and LB Chad Macomber, 5-11, 215, 10 tackles, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery.

L.A. VALLEY – DL Travis Bass had 2 tackles, 3 hurries, 2 sacks, 2 pass knockdowns and returned a fumble 46 yds to a TD.

VENTURA – CB Will Poole, 6-0, 190, a transfer from Boston College, had 6 solo stops, an assist and an interception.

EAST MISS. – LB Ken Hollis, 6-2, 242, contributed 15 solo tackles and 2 assists in 3-0 loss to Northeast.

L.A. PIERCE – DB Steve Handy (Fr.), tallied 10 tackles, 1 interception for a 50-yd TD, 2 fumble recoveries, one for a TD, and a sack.

SANTA BARBARA – DB Derrick Andrews, got in on 7 tackles, 5 solo, 4 pass break ups and 2 interceptions vs. Antelope Valley.

PASADENA – OLB James Griffin, 6-2, 200, had 9 tackles and 3 QB hurries and DT David Harley, 6-1, 294, had 9 tackles, 3 for a loss, and 2 QB hurries vs. East LA.

CERRITOS – LB Justin Burks, 6-1, 230, contributed 11 tackles, 3 for losses, and a QB sack.

MORRISVILLE – LB Chad Rowe, 6-2, 225, had 13 tackles and forced a fumble in 16-14 win over Hudson Valley.

OTHERS

FULLERTON – PK Byungwoo Yun, 5-11, 190, made all 3 of his FG attempts of 31, 46 and 41 yds in the 4th quarter and converted 3 PATs.  The previous week he also kicked 3 FGs. And P Sam Paulescu, 6-0, 185, was 6 for 40.8 avg. 2 inside the 10.
