JC Grid-Wire Weekly Meanderings (9-24-02)

Lots of great info in this week's meanderings. On the topic of Streaks, for instance: San Francisco's 59-0 triumph over West Valley was their 38Th straight victory, tying them with the Boise JC team of 1947-50. The Rams face twice-beaten San Jose Saturday in quest of the new record. L.A. PIERCE ended their 11-game losing streak with the win over Desert, ...

and NEW MEXICO MILITARY's losing string ended at 8 by virtue of their 32-27 victory over Phoenix.  ITASCA is working on the longest losing streak at 12.

DOING A LITTLE CATCHING UP (From the weekend of Sept. 14)

Assad Hafiz, TB for MORRISVILLE rushed for 219 yds on 29 carries in 39-14 win over Utica College JV.  Brad Smith, CANTON LB, recorded 13 tackles, recovered a fumble and had an interception in loss to Milford Academy.

Consistency counts…

Joe Houck, who ran for 143 yds last weekend against Yuba, paced SEQUOIAS over San Jose the previous week with 144 yds on 15 carries.  PALOMAR K Ryan Lux booted a 50-yarder vs. Moorpark and came back with a 45-yd FG in win over Southwestern.  FS Donte Nicholson was impressive in loss to Chaffey.  LACKAWANNA MLB Shawn Day led the defense against Navy with 7 solo tackles and 4 assists.  N.E. MISS. P. Brandon Roberson, had 9 boots for a 46.3 avg.  N.E. MISS. DB Walter Myers, had 2 interceptions and a fumble recovery.  NW MISS WR John Harris, caught 7 passes for 109 yds and 2 TDs.  PEARL RIVER WR Donovan Morgan, 7 catches for 142 yds and 2 TDs.

NORTHWEST MISS. fell to 0-3 to mark the worst start since 1974.  They dropped a baseball score 6-5 decision to ITAWAMBA last Thursday.  Getting flagged 12 times for 98 yds didn't help.

When SADDLEBACK downed Ventura 40-10 they allowed the Bucs just 56 yds rushing.

SISKIYOUS held Redwoods to 19 on the ground.

SOUTHWESTERN nipped L.A. SOUTHWEST 21-20 and had a 316 to 312 edge in total offense and 13-12 in first downs.  That's about right.

GRAND RAPIDS rolled over Harper 42-14  piling up 280 yds rushing to 36 for the Hawks.

When REEDLEY outscored ANTELOPE VALLEY, 46-41, neither team had a ground game worth talking about.  Reedley totaled 24 yards and AVC minus 29.  On the other hand, AVC came up with 356 yds passing and Reedley 289.

PIMA amassed 456 yds and limited Eastern Arizona to just 146. DT Joe Nilsen had a pair of sacks and recovered two fumbles. RB Santos Olague scored 4 times, giving him 9 TDs on the year.  Starting QB Blake Kinart suffered a mild concussion, but should be ready for Scottsdale this weekend.

CONGRATS TO INDEPENDENCE.  Kent Keith's lads ended a 7-game losing streak, and won a conference game for the first time in years by beating Fort Scott 20-13 in OT.  The contest was marred by 29 penalties for 245 yds.

SAN JOAQUIN DELTA's fine soph QB Daniel Taylor had 17 of 21 for 273 and 3 TDs in the 66-24 rout of Monterey with WRs D'Andre Amos and Jomo Wilson picking up 8-161-2 and 7-162-1 stats respectively.  Now that's equal distribution.  Right, the backup QB Ryan Pimental tossed 7 of 8 completions for 158 yds and 4 scores.  Fans are already speculating on the final score of the FRESNO (avg. 55.5 points) and DELTA (62.0) contest Oct. 5 at FCC.  How about 60 to 58?

EL CAMINO has been pretty dinged up so far.  Ace LB Brian Smith hasn't been able to play and super NG Brent Pollack has been trying to play through injuries.  USC transfer RB Chris Howard went down for the season early in the first contest.

JOLIET piled up 614 yds, 416 rushing vs. Illinois Wesleyan JVs.  Antoine Bagwell went 8 for 189 with 3 TDs and Gary Glasby 16 for 127.  WR Kelvin Hayden sat out with injuries.  He has 21 catches for 376 yds on the year in 3 games.

USC will be getting a fine MLB when Marco Chavez, former PALOMAR ace, transfers from Hawaii.  Last we heard ex-SADDLEBACK QB Jason Whieldon, has left Hawaii for personal reasons.

WHAT A CONTRAST IN OFFENSES when SNOW played ARIZONA WESTERN.  AWC had close to 500 yds rushing with Richard Griffin getting 140 and QB John Grier 105, and virtually nada passing.  SNOW picked up 326 thru the air and just 38 rushing. Snow won 36-31, but coach Jeff Kilts said:  "AWC is going to win a lot of games.  They are a good football team."

PASADENA had 7 turnovers against East LA.  R.T. Cowins returned one interception 87 yds for a TD and Victor Alexandre picked off a pair. QB Tim Rattay went out early with injuries and may miss this week's game vs. Golden West.

The BUTTE-FRESNO clash was definitely not a defensive battle.  BUTTE got 621 total yds, 362 passing and FRESNO had 484.  QUOTE FROM Fred Biletnikoff, Jr.: "I wouldn't be surprised if our wide receiver Willie Johnson is playing on Sunday someday."  High praise from the former Raiders star's son, who coaches receivers for the Rams.

PALOMAR has not lost to a San Diego County opponent since 1988, when the Comets fell to Southwestern on a late fourth-quarter touchdown.  The Comets outrushed Southwestern 269 to 32 last week, but had to tally 27 late points to get the win.

  • THAT Casey Mazzotta, the FULLERTON defensive coordinator is also the son of CERRITOS head coach Frank Mazzotta.  So who will Mrs. Mazzotta be rooting for Saturday night?
  • THAT HOLMES is averaging just 12 yards per game via the pass.
  • THAT CABRILLO had just 44 yds total offense, yet held powerful San Francisco to a 24-14 score?
  • THAT – FULLERTON head man Gene Murphy once had the 49ers Steve Mariucci on his coaching staff at Cal State Fullerton?
  • THAT Alfonso Boone, our J.C. GRID-WIRE All-American Defensive Tackle from MT. SAN ANTONIO in 1999, just signed a $4.1 contract with the Chicago Bears where he is now starting?  He went right from the Mounties to the pros.
  • THAT Keith Calkins, who long ago had many winning teams at CHABOT, then was A.D. at SADDLEBACK, has come out of  retirement to take over as AD at Irvine Valley JC?  What no football Keith?

TEN YEARS AGO (Sept. 22)

SADDLEBACK was on top of the J.C. Grid-Wire rankings, followed by N.E. OKLAHOMA, NAVARRO, RICKS and NORTHWEST MISS.  SACRAMENTO was the next highest ranked California team, but as usual at this time of year, California teams have played just 2 games.

Marcellus Crishon was the hot item for SADDLEBACK, having ripped Southwestern for 237 yds and 4 TDs.  RB Brian Knuckles was headed for a big year for COFFEYVILLE.  Fr. QB Mike Maxwell threw for 447 yds to help SAN BERNARDINO gain a 42-tie with Air Force JV, and teammate Craig Newsome had a 100-yd interception.  He went on to play in the pros.   TYLER RB D.D. Turner gained 213 in win over Kilgore.  FRESNO was led by Fr. RB Damian Shelton.

The alumni report featured the likes of QB John Kaleo MONTGOMERY/Maryland; RB Kalin Hall, DIXIE/BYU; QB Anthony Calvillo, MT. SAC/Utah State, who is still playing in the CFL; WR Jason Sehorn, SHASTA/USC has been converted to safety.

17,000 fans turned out for a 29-22 BAKERSFIELD win over TAFT.

157 JCs played football that year.

ELLSWORTH had an offensive line that averaged 6-4 and 354 pounds.

ELLSWORTH QB Scott Rislov has won the San Jose State starting job and has been putting up big numbers—over 400 in a shocking win over Illinois.  HANCOCK's Beau Pierce shared some of the duties with Rislov against Stanford.

BUTTE's Marty Johnson had 229 yds in a game for Utah and then sprained his knee.

Watch ex-GULF COAST WR Doug Gabriel get a good look by the pros in next year's draft.  He has been a burner for Central Florida.

RB Jermaine Green, BUTLER CO., had 3 TDs for Washington St. last week.
