Simmons pulls in big offer

Fluid cover-corners are always a hot commodity every year and one of the best in the country this year is College of the Sequoias CB Traye Simmons (5-9, 180). He signed with Clemson out of high school and, after a standout season last year for COS, he's gotten eight offers including one he just picked up recently from a big-time program.

"Florida just offered me this week," Simmons told "Their coach, coach (Chuck) Heater, called me this week and told me they were offering me a full-scholarship.

"He said they liked my attitude and how I don't back down from anyone. They also liked the fact I could get out after the season and get there in the spring and that would help me pick up their system and get to know the other players as well."

The Gators' offer joins California, Minnesota, Hawaii, Clemson, Ole Miss, Purdue and Middle Tennessee State and Simmons said another school has picked up his recruiting as well.

"North Carolina just talked to me the other day and they said they liked me a lot," Simmons said. "Purdue and Cal both called this week too and then I talked to Florida for a bit.

"My coaches know a lot of the schools recruiting me and they said there are more out there, but those are the ones I know of that have offered and they are the ones I'm sorta focusing on right now, but it's still early for me."

Simmons and his COS teammates faced off against De Anza this past weekend and won 63-14.

"They really didn't throw to my side, but I still had four tackles and a pass knockdown," Simmons said. "I like to play physical and support the run. I'm not one dimensional. I can support against the run and play zone or man. It doesn't matter to me."

Simmons hasn't firmed up plans to visit a particular school at this point, but plans to visit either Cal, Purdue or Florida on September 29th because that is COS's bye week.

"I'm still kind of undecided on who to visit, but I'll be figuring that out soon," Simmons said. "I will probably take a couple more after that, just to make sure I have all the information I need before I commit somewhere."

This weekend College of the Sequoias hosts Reedley.
