Johnson pulls in big offer; sets first visit

It's been a busy first four weeks of the season for Citrus DE/LB Devin Johnson (6-3, 230). He's helped lead his team to a 3-1 start and several programs including the number one team in the nation have made contact. caught up with the playmaking defender and he talked about the start of his season as well as a new offer and that he's set up his first official visit.

"We're doing really well so far this year," Johnson said recently. "We should be 4-0, but we're 3-1 because one of our players that played was ineligible because some paperwork got screwed up so we had to forfeit a game that we actually won, but that's cool we'll play hard the rest of the year and see where things end up."

Johnson has had an excellent first four weeks of the season totalling 38 tackles, two sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery with both of those going for touchdowns.

"My coaches actually have me playing outside linebacker this year which is cool, but it's weird because I was used to playing with my hand down," Johnson said. "It's been a learning experience playing in reverse sometimes, but I think I'm coming along and I got that pick and returned it for a touchdown so I think I'm showing I can play outside linebacker too."

On the recruiting front, Johnson received a big-time offer last week from his hometown school.

"USC offered me last Monday," Johnson said. "I was really excited and kind of in shock because they're such a great program and they are so close to where I live and stuff like that. It's just amazing to get an offer from them.

"Coach (David) Watson told me they like me as both a defensive end and at linebacker, but they like me at end more. Either way, I'm happy to get an offer from such a great program."

Even though Johnson said he was excited with the Trojan offer, he said no school leads among his now seven offers.

"SC, Oregon, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Utah, Nebraska and Arizona State have all offered and they're all even right now," Johnson said. "I'm going to visit Ole Miss on October 6th for their game with Louisiana Tech so that will be one of my officials, the other schools are sort of battling for the other ones.

"I'm not sure if I will take all of my visits right now, but I definitely want to take two or three and then kind of go from there."

Johnson and his Citrus teammates face Los Angeles Valley College on the road September 29th.
