Toscano completed 14 of 23 passes, including a nifty 31-yard touchdown toss to Sheldon Smith less than three minutes into the game to give the Falcons the early lead. The short-yardage backfield of 245-pound Junior Tivao at tailback his brother, 330-pound Johnny, at fullback, scored the other two Cerritos touchdowns. Jesus Ochoa booted a 39-yard field goal late in the first quarter. And the Cerritos defense kept Long Beach off the scoreboard until the final seven minutes of the game, by which time the Falcons were in full control of the game.
Cerritos took the opening kickoff and put together a quick 6-play drive to take the lead and never trailed. Toscano completed two passes to Ryan Pettys, who ended up with team-highs of 5 catches and 93 yards, and one to Craig Bell to get the Falcons into scoring position. Then he lofted a perfect pass over the shoulder of Smith, who hauled in the ball just across the goal line for a 31-yard scoring play with 12:09 left in the first quarter to make it 6-0.
After a Long Beach punt, Cerritos extended its lead to 9-0 when Ochoa kicked his field goal at the end of a 10-play drive that covered 44 yards.
Neither team scored again until late in the first half when Cerritos got the ball on an interception by Michael Terry, who returned it to the Long Beach 35. A 24-yard tun by Goode and a 20-yard pass from Toscano to Ronnie Goforth overcame a pair of Cerritos penalties and got the Falcons a first and goal at the 4. On came the Tivaos (both of whom are starters on defense), and Junior followed the lead block of Johnny into the end zone for a 4-yard scoring play with 49 seconds left in the half to make it 15-0.
The third quarter was scoreless as the teams combined for five punts, but Cerritos got another touchdown to put the game away early in the fourth. A short punt gave the Falcons the ball at the 49, and the Tivaos again combined on a 3-yard run to cap the 7-play drive with Junior Tivao scoring his second touchdown of the game (on his second carry). Randall Reynoso’s extra point made it 22-0 and ended any doubt as to the outcome of the game.
Long Beach got a pair of touchdowns in the final seven minutes on a pair of touchdown passes from Andrew DeFelice. His 40-yard scoring toss to Aaron Lewis with 6:53 left made it 22-6, but on the attempted 2-point conversion DeFelice was tackled by Cerritos B.G. Walters short of the goal line. Then DeFelice threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Justin Robertson with 17 seconds left to complete the scoring.
For the Cerritos defense, there were a great many standouts, including the Tivaos (Junior is a linebacker and Johnny is a tackle). But Walters was probably the most visually impressive, with a devastating hit on Lewis that caused a fumble and a quarterback sack to his credit. Daniel Bolt recovered that fumble and also had a sack. And Terry not only had the interception but also had a sack.
For Long Beach, DeFelice finished 21 of 40 passing for 286 yards, 2 interceptions and 2 touchdowns. Robertson, a determined runner and capable receiver, was impressive with a team-high 38 yards rushing on 7 carries and a pair of catches for 22 yards. And Lewis had game-highs of 8 catches for 101 yards and a score. But the Vikings were held to just 41 yards on the ground for the night and nearly half of their total offensive production (144 yards out of a total of 327 for the night) came on the last two drives after Cerritos went with many reserves on defense.
With the win, Cerritos matches its 2006 season win total of 3 and could easily be 4-0 but for a triple-overtime loss September 15th against Golden West. The Falcons will host Fullerton next week. Long Beach, meanwhile, drops to 1-3.

4-Thompson blocked the extra point for LB. Cerritos’ 2nd TD came 4 plays after Terry’s int. A pulverizing hit by Walters on Lewis caused the fumble that Bolt recovered. Toscano started at QB for Cerritos; Fischer played a couple of series in the second half. Lewis’ pass was on a flanker option play. On both of Junior Tivao’s TD runs he followed his “little” (i.e. younger) brother Johnny (a 330-pound NT/FB) into the end zone. Johnny Tivao played NT and Jr. Tivao played LB except for the two goal-line situations.
