Recruiting picks up for Westling

Even though his team is off to an 0-4 start, Southwestern QB Drew Westling isn't getting discouraged. He's also starting to hear from a couple of schools that are looking for a veteran signal-caller to come in and play right away. caught up with the talented passer shortly before practice recently and he talked about his team's season so far as well as his thoughts on recruiting.

"We've come so close and it's frustrating, but we're not down or discouraged," Westling said. "Last week we lost a tough one to Chaffey and I got banged around a little bit and the coaches were like 'you're trying to do too much and you're dinged up' so we shut it down so I could be ready to go for this week."

For the season Westling has thrown for 950 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.

"I'm focusing on being more accurate because I'm at 55% right now, but I need to be better than that," Westling said. "We feel like we're so close to getting over the hump so we're just working harder and we're staying strong as a team because taht's the only way we're going to get this thing turned around."

Westling was a scholarship quarterback at Tulsa before head coach Steve Kragthorpe moved on the Louisville and he didn't feel comfortable with the new coaching staff and where things were heading so he decided to move on and ended up at Southwestern where a new staff, led by head coach Ed Carberry, was trying to build up the program and they needed a signal-caller that could help the young players around him get better.

Since Westling has been through the recruiting process before, he said he's willing to be patient and see what happens and two schools have begun to show interest despite his team's lack of on-field success.

"San Diego State and Boston College have been the most serious of the bunch," Westling said. "San Diego State came to our first game and BC has said they want some film from me so I'm going to get that put together and send it out.

"Other than that, I've gotten a lot of letters and stuff, but I don't need to go into those schools because they send that stuff out to everyone."

We'll have more from Westling in the coming weeks.
