On Pasadena's second play from
scrimmage, Rattay suffered what appeared to be a serious injury to his right
knee. As he began to scramble from
the pocket, he collapsed in a heap without being touched by a defender.
He was wheeled to the sidelines, and he remained on the training table
with ice on the knee for the rest of the half.
He was on the sidelines in street clothes and on crutches in the second
The Pasadena defense had a typically
outstanding game, allowing no TDs and only 2 field goals.
Cedric Oliver, James Griffin and Chuck Jones were among the many
standouts. After Rattay left the
game, Orange Coast was able to manage just a single field goal before halftime,
allowing LoVett to settle in and allowing the coaching staff to make the
necessary adjustments at intermission. On
the one first-half scoring drive, the Pirates held the ball for 9:29 and drove
to the PCC 1-yard line, but had to settle for a 27-yd field goal.
Once the second half began,
Pasadena's offense gave them the lead, scoring on their first 2 possessions
after the break. Jerome Harrison
got the Lancers on the board on a 19-yd run, but LoVett played a big part in
that as well with an incredible fake that had much of the OCC defense running
after him instead of the ball carrier. And
on the second TD, LoVett carried the ball around the right side from 2 yards out
to cap an 80-yd drive that took 4:06. Those
TDs were sandwiched around a 40-yd field goal by Orange Coast's Bryce
And the Pasadena defense came up big
on the key play of the game. With
just over 7 minutes left, Orange Coast drove deep into Lancer territory.
With the score 14-6, the Pirates could have tied the game with a
touchdown and a 2-point conversion. However,
on 4th and goal from the 4, DL/LB Cedric Oliver broke through and
sacked OCC's Derek Aspinwall from behind at the 9, ending Orange Coast's
drive and their last real chance at tying the game.
Kelvan Price's interception on OCC's final possession with 1:50 left
all but clinched the win for Pasadena.
LoVett and the Lancer offense
struggled for much of the first half after Rattay's injury, ending their 5
first-half possessions with 3 punts, a fumble and an interception.
One of Joe Timchenko's punts, however, went 70 yards, and OCC had 5
punts of their own in the first half. The
only score came on Sheridan's 27-yd field goal following the long drive of
9:29, and at halftime it was 3-0 Orange Coast.
In the second half, the mobile
LoVett seemed much more comfortable and there were some obvious changes in the
Lancer offense. Pasadena scored
touchdowns on its first 2 possessions of the second half, and Timchenko missed a
20-yd field goal attempt on their third possession.
(The ball was spotted on the right hash mark and he kicked it straight
– right down the hash mark and wide of the goal post).
Timchenko also missed a long field goal early in the 4th
quarter. In all, the Lancer offense
rolled up 15 first downs in the second half.
LoVett's 46-yd run following Price's interception clinched the win
Pasadena's Harrison led all
rushers with 133 yds on 19 carries.
WR Hannibal Thomas led all receivers with 4 catches for 47
yds. Fullback Allen Kennett rushed
for 65 yds on 9 carries and also caught 3 passes for 19 yds.
For Orange Coast, QB Aspinwall
finished 13 of 35 for 153 yds and an interception.
RB Niles Mittasch rushed 22 times for 64 yds and caught 2 passes for 19
And Safety Nick Dominelli had a big night with an
interception, a fumble recovery and numerous tackles.
Pasadena, which entered the game ranked #1 in Southern California and #6 nationally by JC Grid-Wire, ups its record to 5-0. Orange Coast, which entered tied for #18 in Southern California, falls to 2-3.

Pasadena entered 4-0, ranked #1 in South, #6 JCGW; Orange Coast entered 2-2, ranked t-#18. Rattay started at QB for PCC but inj his rt knee on PCC's 2nd play from scrimmage. His status for the rest of the season is unknown at this time. Key play of the game: OCC had 4th and goal at the 4 with 7:01 left but Aspinwall was sacked by Oliver on the play. On OCC's 1st scoring drive, they went 72 yds in 9:29. They reached the 1 yd line but a grounding penalty pushed them back to the 10 for the FG. Griffin got credit for the sack on the grounding penalty. Timchenko had a 70-yd punt in the first half. He missed his 20-yd FG when he kicked it straight along the right hash marks (where the ball was placed). His 47-yarder had the distance. Sheridan's 40-yd FG had about 20 yds to spare on the distance. Brescini's punt was downed at the PCC 1 yard line. LoVett and Harrison were backups when the game started but they ended up playing big roles.
