Five offers and one visit set for Portis

With five offers under his belt, San Mateo LB Andre Portis (6-3, 240) has been on recruiting radars for quite a while. He's had an outstanding season so far for the Bulldogs and now he's set up one official visit and there could be more offers on the way in the very near future.

"We've had a great year so far," Portis said. "We've struggled the past three weeks, but we've played some really tough teams.

"Now we have Feather River and that should be a good game and we'll play hard and do our best to come out with a win."

Portis plays outside linebacker in a corps that also includes two other standouts in Kurt Filler and Hanson Sekona.

"We all make plays and challenge each other," Portis said. "When one of the other guys makes a play that makes the other two of us want to make the next play.

"It's fun, but it's competitive and that makes us all better."

For the season, Portis has totaled 35 tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks.

His size and speed have made him a hot commodity with some four-year schools and that has helped him garner five offers as well as the promise of more to come.

"Marshall, New Mexico State, Grambling, Colorado State and Temple all have offered and I'm going to visit Marshall the week after Thanskgiving," Portis said. "Kansas State said they are close to offering me and they want me to trip out there and then San Jose State and Oregon State have both said they are getting close to offering as well and both of them are talking about visits too."

Portis said all of the schools looking at him have mentioned his speed (4.65) and athleticism as reasons they like him and all have said they want to give him a look at weakside linebacker or possibly inside as a MIK linebacker.

"I can play either spot, but I prefer outside because you can just attack and only worry about taking on a tackle or a tight end," Portis said. "In the middle you have to worry about the fullback or the guards coming at you and that can get tough, but I can do that and be successful I think. I just haven't done it for a while."

Portis plans to finish up his course-work in December and will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.

We'll have more from Portis over the coming weeks.
