Filler is a tackling machine

He plays in one of the best linebacking corps in the California JUCO ranks this year, but make no mistake about it, San Mateo's Kurt Filler (6-2, 220) is a standout even amongst the best linebackers in the state. spoke with Filler over the weekend and he updated us on his season, recruiting and the friendly competition that drives him to be the best he can be.

"Yeah, we all push each other to be better players," Filler told "Me and Hanson Sekona and Andre Portis are all out there making plays and when one guy makes a play that just makes you want to step up and make the next play so you don't get outworked.

"All three of us knew each other in high school from camps and from playing against each other so for us to be here and playing together it's real cool and a friendly competition."

For the season Filler has posted 65 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries while leading the Bulldogs to postseason play.

"We've had a great season so far, but we want to finish it off strong," Filler said. "We'll see what happens in the next couple weeks."

On the recruiting front, Filler has just mailed out his transcripts to Tennessee and Kansas State and said both schools are talking about getting him out for a visit in January.

"They both call all the time and they've been out to see our games and practices," Filler said. "Both want me to visit in January so I need to set that up, but right now nothing is confirmed."

Filler plays outside linebacker for the Bulldogs and he uses his 4.6 speed to cover receivers and tight ends, but he said he'd be happy to play inside if the need arose wherever he ends up.

"I don't care really, I just want to play," Filler said. "Wherever the team I end up playing for wants me, that's where I'll work hard to be the best I can be."

Filler doesn't have an offer from either school yet, but said he hopes he'll have one after his visits.

We'll have more from Filler in the coming weeks as he firms up his plans.
