Walters set to talk to coaches

One of the top shut-down corners in the California JC ranks the past two years has been Cerritos CB B.G. Walters (5-9, 185). He's been getting some tepid interest from several BCS schools, but things will pick up later this week and over the next few weeks as coaches from four-year schools make their way to campus to visit with Walters and he's hoping to get some offers after thos discussions.

"I'm in Florida right now, but I head back tomorrow to get back on campus," Walters told recently. "A lot of coaches have been talking to me from lots of schools, but they wanted to meet with me in person and talk to me a bit and then they said they would probably offer and set up visits with me."

Because of his excellent strength and quickness and 4.45 speed, Walters has become a hot commodity for several BCS programs.

"South Florida has been the one recruiting me the hardest," Walters said. "Since I'm from the state, they are a school I'm very interested in, but they haven't offered me.

"Washington State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and a bunch of other coaches are heading to my school in the next week or so and that's when I will know more.

"With all the coaches getting fired and moving around, I'm sort of in a 'wait-and-see' place right now because some of the schools looking at me have had coaching changes."

This season Walters only played in eight game because of a "tweaked" knee, but he still managed to post over 50 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions and double-digit pass breakups.

"I had a good year for the most part, but it was frustrating being nicked up a bit," Walters said. "I nicked my knee up a little and we sort of shut things down so I wouldn't get hurt bad and so it could heal. It's good to go now though so schools don't need to worry about me not being healthy."

Walters will finish his two-year degree in May so he expects to take most of his visits in January and then hopes to make his decision shortly after taking those.

We'll continue to follow Walters' progress in recruiting and report anything new as it happens.
