Mauga opens things up

One of the standout JC defensive lineman in the country this past season was Grossmont's Magnum Mauga (6-0, 290). He committed early to his childhood favorite, but after a misunderstanding, Mauga has now opened things back up and he's hoping to take at least one more visit before he signs his letter-of-intent the first week of February.

"I de-committed from BYU today actually," Mauga admitted to on Sunday night. "I really haven't told anyone about it yet, but basically, they told me they wanted to bring me in during the spring, so I signed with them back in December, but they can't bring me in during the spring because they said they don't have enough room so they want me to come in during the summer.

"They told me one thing and switched it up and I don't want to be a step behind with them so I'm looking around again and I'm basically open to anyone who wants to recruit me."

Mauga has offers from several top programs around the country. He claims offers from Auburn, Arizona State, Nevada, Oregon State, Oregon, Nevada and UNLV among others.

He's taken trips to Auburn, Arizona State and Nevada and said he's hoping to check out at least two other schools before he makes his final decision.

"Actually Florida called me this past week and wanted me to take a trip out there and to bring my film," Mauga said. "Oregon, UNLV and Oregon State all called last week and they want me to come on visits too so I've got some thinking to do about which schools I want to go see."

Mauga had an outstanding season for Grossmont this past fall. After playing defensive tackle in 2006, Mauga moved outside to play end and wracked up over 80 tackles, 10.5 sacks and had two forced fumbles.

For his efforts he was named a first team All-American and received All-Conference honors as well as the Joe Roth Memorial Award.

"It was fun moving outside, but I'm an inside guy," Mauga said. "I like playing inside more and pretty much every school wants me there."

We'll have more from Mauga in coming weeks as he gets closer to making a decision.
