Bauer Leads Canyons Past Ventura

Kyle Bauer threw for 435 yards and 6 TDs to lead College of the Canyons to a 61-19 win over Ventura in a WSC game at COC October 26th. Bauer's 6 TDs tied the school record for a single game and gave him a total of 22 TD passes on the season, setting a new COC school mark. The 435 yards were a career high. And Bauer still hasn't thrown an interception all season.

And those weren't the only new entries in the Canyons record book.  In the 3rd quarter, Bauer combined with WR Tyrell Smith for a 96-yard scoring pass which set a new COC mark for longest TD pass and longest play from scrimmage.  That was Bauer's 6th TD pass, and it came 2 plays after an interception by Marte'a Johnson had given the Cougars the ball at their own 4 yard line.

Smith also tied a COC record with 3 TD receptions.  On the night, he finished with 4 catches for 172 yards.

And yet the one Smith catch that did not result in a touchdown may have had the most impact.  With the score 6-0 in favor of Ventura, Smith adjusted his route to catch a rare Bauer underthrow along the left sideline.  He was covered on the play by Ventura's standout CB Will Poole.  As Smith went for the ball, he and Poole got tangled up.  Smith made the catch and appeared to land on Poole, who left the game shaken up.  Poole would return for a couple of series (and block an extra point attempt), but left the game for good before halftime.  To say the least, he was missed as COC rolled up 444 passing yards.

It was an offensive onslaught for the Canyons.  After fumbling on their first play from scrimmage, COC scored touchdowns on their next 6 possessions to take command of the game.  In all, the Cougars amassed 573 yards of offense and 28 first downs, and they scored all 9 of their TDs on offense.  And they held the ball for just 21:09, a testament to how quickly they scored once they got the ball.

Ventura's Jason Beck helped keep the Pirates in the game for a quarter.  Beck had 2 TD passes in the opening stanza and a third just before halftime and finished 15 of 24 for 202 yards.  His 18-yard toss to TE Victor Sesay midway through the opening quarter gave Ventura a short-lived 6-0 lead.  And his 20-yard pass to Dwayne Taylor near the end of the quarter brought Ventura back within a point at 13-12.

But COC just kept scoring touchdowns.  WR  Trevor Brackett had 2 TDs among his 4 catches for 69 yards.  Other Cougars who scored touchdowns were J.J. Arrington, Jason Hogan, Mychal Williams and Will Caldwell.  Caldwell ended up as the leading Cougar rusher with 62 yards on just 4 carries.  Return specialist Ramon Perry finished with 108 yards on 4 punt returns (including a 72-yarder which set up COC's final TD) and 60 yards on 3 kickoff returns.

For Ventura, Marcus Crawford led all rushers with 99 yards on 23 carries.  Sesay led Pirate receivers with 4 catches, good for 47 yards and a TD.  WR Tremaine Murray had 3 catches for 53 yards and a score.  And John Koker had an excellent day as the punter, averaging 46.4 yards on 8 punts including a 66-yarder.

The game took a bizarre turn late in the third quarter.  COC's J.J. Arrington ran for about 12 yards and lost the ball, and Ventura recovered.  The officials had a lengthy conference to discuss whether or not Arrington had hit the ground before losing the ball.  And their answer was...they weren't sure.  So they ruled the play didn't count, and awarded a "do-over".  To say the least, this displeased Ventura Coach Terry Morris, who drew 4 consecutive unsportsmanlike penalties arguing the call.  COC scored their 8th touchdown following all this, making it 54-19.

The one down note for COC was an injury to DB Justin Goss in the 4th quarter.  Preliminary word was a broken fibula, and Goss was carted off the field to the ambulance positioned at the edge of the field.

With the win, COC moves to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in conference.  Ventura falls to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in conference.
