Staley enjoying time at Portland State

A player who was a leader on one of the top JC squads in the state of California was College of the Canyons C Tyler Staley (6-3, 275) and the young man who was one of the top pivots in the country ended up signing with Portland State this past December and he's having fun getting to know his new teammates as well as the getting used to the personality that is Jerry Glanville.

"He's a great coach," Staley told JCFootball.com recently. "He's so easy to play for and he just lights up the room when he walks in. If you're having a bad day, he can put a smile on your face with something he says or a story he tells.

"I've really liked the first month and a half up here. He's definitely a character, but it lightens the team up and he's a coach that takes all of the pressure off of us with the media and puts it on himself so that we can do our jobs and handle our business."

Staley was getting some long looks from San Diego State, Washington State, Oregon State, Utah and UNLV, but it was the Vikings who stepped up with an offer and he jumped at the chance to get started on his career at the next level.

"I probably could have waited, but Portland State offered me before I had to sign in December," Staley said. "That was huge for me because I wanted to get on with my career, get up here and start working out and get my academics set up so I can graduate on time and move on with my life when college is over."

Staley is already on campus and working out with the team and he'll have three years to play two starting this fall.
