Alabama State gets a good one in Herchenbach

Patience is a virtue and Merced QB Reid Herchenbach (6-3, 200) has shown plenty of it while waiting for a scholarship offer from a four-year school. The talented signal-caller got his first offer over the weekend from a D-1AA school and, instead of walking on at Louisiana Tech, he's decided to follow in the footsteps of a former Hornet and current NFL quarterback.

"I got offered a full-ride by Alabama State last Saturday," Herchenbach told "I'm going to visit them on April 11th for their spring game and if everything goes as planned I will sign with them while I'm there."

Louisiana Tech was recruiting Herchenbach and had come close to extending an offer, but he said they waited too long.

"Well, they started school on Tuesday and they didn't offer so I think they've waited too long to expect me to come in and play right away," Herchenbach said. "I was hoping I would hear something from them by Friday of last week and when that didn't happen I pretty much committed to Alabama State.

"They have an immediate opening for playing time and Tarvaris Jackson who plays for the Minnesota Vikings went to Alabama State so I think they can push me to get to the next level and that's ultimately my goal."

As a sophomore at Merced, Herchenbach had a solid season completing 57.7% of his passes for over 1,500 yards, 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Herchenbach already has his two-year degree and he said if everything goes as expected he will be in Montgomery, Alabama in June and he'll have three years to play two when he steps on campus.
