Gomes makes most of opportunity

A lock-down corner is always a need for most football teams and one of the better cover-men in the Cali JUCO ranks this year is CCSF CB Dejon Gomes (6-1, 190). The talented defensive back, who can play almost anywhere in the secondary, talked with JCFootball.com earlier this week and he updated us on his offseason as well as what his focus has been on during workouts so far.

"I'm trying to get stronger and work on my technique," Gomes told JCFootball.com. "My strength is something I wanted to work on after last season and I've been hitting it hard in the weight room so far.

"As far as my technique, I wanted to work on my footwork so I didn't waste any steps and I also want to work on how I recognize routes so I can deal with receivers coming out of their breaks and stuff like that."

Gomes prepped at James Logan High School in Union City, California and he was a standout on his team, but because they had a coaching change before his senior year, he didn't get a lot of help in recruiting.

"By the time the coaches got to know me, it was too late to get my tape out and to start talking to schools," Gomes said. "I was frustrated, but playing for CCSF has been a blessing to me.

"The coaches here are great and this school and program have a great tradition. They get guys graduated and moved on to the next level and that was really important to me."

As a freshman in 2007, Gomes posted solid numbers, wracking up 27 tackles, three interceptions and eight passes broken up and he was named the Defensive Player of the Game in the Rams' bowl game.

So far he hasn't gotten much attention, but he's hoping that his full-qualifier status as well as his versatility will attract some four-year programs.

"I played safety in college, so I could do it in college, but I like playing corner a lot," Gomes said. "I enjoy hitting and tackling and I enjoy covering guys. Pretty much, I just like playing DB."

Gomes will finish his two-year degree in December and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.

We'll continue to track Gomes' progress over the coming weeks and months and update things as they change.
