Russell talks recruiting

Because of the big receivers being employed by offenses around the country, big corners are starting to come into vogue. A perfect example of this is Pierce CB Chaz Russell (6-0, 200) and he's already got one offer under his belt and several more schools looking at him. caught up with the talented shut-down corner recently and he updated us on recruiting and his offseason so far…

"My offseason has been going great," Russell told recently. "I'm really working hard on getting my footwork down.

"Last year was my first year ever playing defense so it was a bit of an adjustment for me, so I want to get my footwork to be better so I won't waste steps and I can start just reacting to stuff instead of thinking."

The reason last season was his first on defense was because Russell was a standout quarterback prospect in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and he had several schools looking his way, but he didn't have the grades to make it to D-1 right away.

"Ole Miss, Central Florida, Toledo and Arizona State were all after me pretty hard, but I wasn't going to make it grade-wise," Russell admitted. "I knew I was going to need to go to a JC and Pierce had a good rep and my coaches and friends sorta pushed me this way.

"I've had fun out here. It's a lot different than Florida, but it's been fun and I've enjoyed my time out here."

Last year, despite missing one game because of a hip injury, Russell still managed to post 35 tackles, 11 passes broken up and one interception.

Because he had a solid freshman campaign, Russell is starting to hear from a couple D-1 programs and he even has one offer under his belt.

"I got offered by Memphis a couple weeks ago," Russell noted. "West Virginia, Ohio State, Oregon State and Middle Tennessee have been showing me a lot of attention and they said they like my speed (4.4) and my athleticism (a 36-inch vertical) and how I have a lot of upside."

While Russell is far from making a decision, he did mention he expects to sign in December so he can be on campus for spring ball and he also noted that he will have three years to play two when he arrives.
