Early interest from two school for Vasquez

Reedley always produces some top football talent every year and S Armando Vasquez (5-1, 205) is one of the top returning defenders in Northern California. JCFootball.com caught up with the talented defender and he updated us on his offseason as well as what schools have started to show interest in acquiring his services.

"I played at Fresno City last year, but I was just too far from home," Vasquez told JCFootball.com recently. "I started and the coaches and players up there were cool, but I wanted to be closer to my family and being here at Reedley works for that."

Vasquez prepped at Clovis East High School in Clovis, California where he played linebacker for the Timberwolves. Even though he was a standout on the gridiron, he didn't get many looks because he didn't have the grades necessary to qualify.

"I learned my lesson from that," Vasquez said. "I'm all set to graduate in May (of 2009) so I knuckled down and got serious about things."

As a freshman at Fresno City, Vasquez started every game and totaled 71 tackles, three tackles-for-loss and two interceptions, one of which he returned 63 yards for a touchdown against Sierra.

"I played corner and safety last year, but I think I'm a better fit at safety or in a rover position," Vasquez said. "I play the run and pass well, but I'm really focused on recognition of plays so I can be more aggressive coming up against the run.

"It's all about studying film and just getting used to formations. Once you have that down, you can pretty much tell what's going to happen."

On the recruiting front, Vasquez has seen early interest from two programs.

"Sacramento State and Kansas State are the two right now," Vasquez said. "A lot of schools didn't know I moved so a lot of them still think I'm up at City.

"Spring will be a big deal for me to impress people and show them I can play and that I'm worth them offering."

As stated earlier, Vasquez is on pace to graduate in May 2009 and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
